At 12:24 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, a 16-year-old male student opened fire at Evergreen High School in Colorado. Three students were hospitalized following the shooting, including the suspect, who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Two of the injured students were taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood: one remains in critical condition, while the other has been treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect later died from his injuries. His identity has not been publicly released. Authorities reported that officers arrived at the school within two minutes of receiving the emergency call.

Governor Jared Polis issued a statement:

“My heart goes out to the victims and their families as they grapple with this senseless act of violence. I, the Evergreen Community, and the entire State of Colorado are devastated by this tragedy and will keep the victims, as well as their friends and family, in our thoughts. This kind of violence has absolutely no place in Colorado or anywhere, especially our schools, where kids should feel safe to learn and grow. No family should ever fear for their child’s life as they send them to school. I will continue to closely monitor this situation and receive updates from local law enforcement and the Colorado State Patrol.” 

This shooting occurred just 14 days after a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where two children were killed and 21 others injured during a school Mass.

According to CNN, there have been 47 school shootings in the United States in 2025 as of September 10, with 24 of those incidents occurring on college campuses.
