As artificial intelligence becomes more common in classrooms and workplaces, Metro State University is launching a five-session workshop series to help students develop practical AI skills while emphasizing responsible and ethical use. 

Beginning Sept. 14, the Metro Momentum Artificial Intelligence Series will meet Mondays from noon to 1 p.m. in Founder’s Hall L117, with students able to attend either in person or on Zoom. Students who complete all five sessions will earn a digital badge recognizing their participation. 

Open to students from all majors and experience levels, the series is designed to introduce the fundamentals of artificial intelligence while encouraging responsible and transparent use of AI in academic work. Each session combines instruction with hands-on activities, allowing participants to apply what they learn through practical exercises and resources students can use in future coursework. 

Topics include how large language models work, prompt writing, AI-assisted research, everyday productivity tools, and ethical decision-making. Students will also explore common AI limitations, including hallucinations and misinformation, while learning strategies to verify AI-generated content with reliable sources before using it in assignments. 

Later sessions focus on building research workflows that combine AI with credible outside sources, creating accessible presentations and study materials, and documenting AI use through disclosure and verification practices. The final workshop centers on three guiding principles for responsible AI use: disclose AI assistance, verify information, and protect personal privacy. 

As colleges and universities continue adapting to the growing role of artificial intelligence in education, AI literacy is becoming an increasingly important skill for students across disciplines. Rather than positioning AI as a replacement for learning, the Metro Momentum series emphasizes using the technology to support critical thinking, strengthen research practices, and encourage responsible decision-making.
