For actor Monty Hays, returning to the Children’s Theatre Company is more than just another role; it is a full-circle moment rooted in growth, reflection, and purpose. 

Hays first stepped onto that stage as a child actor. Now, coming back as an adult, the experience carries a heavier weight. 

“It feels both incredibly familiar and like I’ve lived lifetimes in between,” Hays said. “Being there as a child and now returning as an adult, I see everything from the other side. It’s really beautiful, full circle. I’m excited to be back.” 

That shift from child performer to adult actor comes with new responsibilities. Hays is not just performing but also guiding the next generation of young artists. 

“As an adult actor, we’re working with younger actors, mentoring them and leading by example,” Hays explained. “Showing them how to receive notes, how to adapt when things change quickly, because in theater, things are always changing.” 

Hays’ performance history includes well-known productions like The Wizard of Oz, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, and Shrek the Musical. Each role has contributed to shaping his craft, though when reflecting on defining moments in his career, Hays points to something unexpected. 

“The moment that really reawakened something in me didn’t even happen at Children’s Theatre Company,” he said. “I went to New York a few years ago and was in an audience where people could come up, act, and sing with the cast. Being there reminded me why I fell in love with theater in the first place.” 

After spending much of his childhood immersed in performance, Hays admitted there was a period of uncertainty about life beyond the stage. That New York experience reignited his passion and reaffirmed his place in the world of theater. 

Beyond performance, Hays is also committed to representation and inclusion, particularly for nonbinary performers navigating traditional roles. 

“We talked about representation, especially for nonbinary people who want to play both types of roles,” Hays said. “I want to continue making a difference in theater.” 

As Hays continues his journey, his return to Children’s Theatre Company stands as a testament to growth, resilience, and the power of coming back to where it all began, not as the same person, but as someone ready to lead, inspire, and create space for others.
