On Wednesday, April 22nd around 12:30 P.M, police responded to a shooting at the block of West 66th street and York Ave. just outside Southdale Mall in Edina. Local businesses such as the mall itself, Fairview hospital, and Southdale medical building went on lockdown. Officers at the scene performed life-saving procedures on the victim, but the wound turned fatal. Three suspects fled from the scene while a swat team, K-9 unit, drone, and helicopter were deployed to find the suspects.

The suspects were eventually found around 4:30 P.M. later in the day and arrested on suspicion of murder. Police claim the victim and suspects knew each other prior to the shooting. Two Edina men, ages 21 and 20, along with a 22-year-old St. Paul man were booked.

The crime happened at a transitional housing apartment building across the street. Owned by Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative, which released a statement describing the apartments as “a supportive housing community for young adults ages 18-24 in Edina who have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity.”

Minnesota State Senator Alice Mann (D-Edina) said in a public statement, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the shooting that occurred in our community that has left one person dead. My heart goes out to the victim’s loved ones and everyone in our community affected by this gun violence. I am grateful to the first responders who acted quickly to secure the scene and cared for those in the surrounding areas. Minnesotans deserve safe communities, free from gun violence. We cannot accept this as normal, and we must take action to protect people wherever they are.”

Update: 04/23/2026

The victim in this case has since been identified as 22-year-old John Stroud. Charges have yet to be filed against the 4 suspects being held in police custody. The Metropolitan has a policy to not name suspects until after police have filed criminal charges.
