The New CBS

By Jared Gudnason

David Ellison is the son of Larry Ellison. Ellison Senior is arguably best known as the founder and chief technical officer of Oracle, Inc. His son is the leader of Skydance Media, that recently acquired the former Columbia Broadcasting System, or CBS.

Originally speaking, Skydance mergered with Paramount 15 years ago, to distribute their films, Hollywood b.s. et cetera, et cetera. As of this year, however, the transformation of CBS News between the merger and
national media landscape since then has become, well, problematic. As of this week the flagship program 60 Minutes, aired a special on the base camp at Nepal’s Mount Everest. The general assessment was that a story on the El Salvadorian prison where undocumented migrants were being held would air.

Our country’s media landscape is seems to be inching ever closer to state television, like Russia. More than slightly concerning, the stories broadcast are beforehand, approved by the reigning federal government.

Regarding the CECOT El Salvador story the head of CBS News, Bari Weiss, allegedly disclosed the story to the federal administration, and a decision was made to run the Nepalese story alternatively. Broadcasted media in Russia arguably is articulated propaganda, which would be not dissimilar from scrubbing a story from here.

ICE has been targeting individuals in St. Paul near Metro State for the last two weeks congruently. The scrubbed story, when broadcast in other countries, concerns the detainment of Venezuelan national, who happened to be a college student.

The current lack of concern of reality by the executive branch and their henchmen, while nothing new, is a disturbing exercise driven by a deserting former reality game-show host turned White House resident at
absolute best. Ad apologies, but we still have a minimum of three years to go with this. The merger of Paramount Skydance and CBS News is a just a small step directionally to allowing the ultra-wealthy to broadcasttheir biases.

From an Eastern Bloc perspective, events in 2019 involved a minority shareholder of Russia’s Channel One, Roman Abramovich, obtained Israeli citizenship and therefore was influenced to relinquish his state-run share. Coincidentally, Abramovich had ownership for roughly the same amount of time as the Paramount Skydance original merger.

With the cancellation of The Late Show franchise earlier this year, it’s clear that viewing options for comedy shows are shifting. Regardless, staying mindful of broadcast content regardless of it’s medium is something us consumers should, ideally, acclimate to.
