With Halloween just right around the corner, it is important to remember to be safe and protect yourself (and others) during this time. Whether you are taking your children out for trick-or-treating or attending parties, keep these tips recommended by the city of Saint Paul.

Dress Up Safely

  • Keep costumes short to prevent trips, falls and other bumps in the night.
  • Check that the costumes are flame-retardant so that you, children and other adults aren’t in danger near burning jack-o’-lanterns and other potential fire hazards.
  • Use makeup instead of a mask. Masks can be hot and uncomfortable, and they can obstruct a person’s vision. This is especially dangerous for children and can cause them to have difficulties seeing what is in front of them.
  • Place reflective tape on costumes or wear light colors.

Make Trick-or-Treating Trouble-Free

  • Stay in groups, and parents should be sure to accompany small children.
  •  If your child is older, make sure that they trick-or-treat with their friends. It is recommended that parents map out a safe route so they know where their kids will be.
  •  If kids go out in the dark, make sure they have a working flashlight. · Make sure kids understand not to enter strangers’ houses or cars.

Dressing Up

  • Even though blood and gore are harmless fun, dressing up as your favorite superhero, pirate or alien can bring out aggressive behavior.
  • Fake knives, swords, guns and other accessories can bring harm, too. If these objects are part of yours or your child’s costume, make sure they are made from cardboard or other flexible material.

Keep these suggestions in mind when having fun and haunting Halloween night. Remember that your safety is more important than being bold!
