Founder’s Day 2026 at the University of Minnesota: Innovation, Research, and Entrepreneurial Thinking

On May 13, I had the opportunity to attend Founder’s Day 2026 at the University of Minnesota, hosted by the Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship and innovation spaces connected to the Walter Library and the Carlson School ecosystem. The event brought together students, startup founders, researchers, innovators, educators, and entrepreneurs presenting projects across healthcare technology, sustainability, artificial intelligence, commercialization, education, and creative design. 

Walking through the event felt like stepping into a space where classroom learning, research, and entrepreneurship intersected in real time. The environment was energetic and collaborative with attendees moving between startup booths, demonstrations, presentations, networking conversations, and innovation showcases. What stood out most was the diversity of ideas being explored and the willingness of students and founders to publicly share projects that are still evolving and improving. 

One of the projects that immediately caught my attention was called Warm Wave, a wearable menstrual pain relief concept focused on portability, customization, and comfort. The project explored how heating and cooling sensations could be integrated into a reusable and discreet wearable device designed to “move with you.” Beyond the product itself, the presentation reflected how innovation can emerge from everyday challenges and personal lived experiences while combining healthcare, usability, and entrepreneurial thinking.

Another project that stood out was Particle4x HoloCMA, presented by a speaker named Tanishq. The system has been deployed at Bankhead National Forest to collect open-air particle data from the environment. According to the presentation, the collected data is used to detect and classify airborne particles such as pollen, spores, dust, and debris. The project demonstrated how environmental monitoring, AI-powered analysis, and real-world field deployment can work together to better understand ecosystems and airborne particle behavior. As an Environmental Science student, I found this especially meaningful because it connected environmental observation, technology, and data analysis in a practical and applied way.

I also had the chance to learn about Startupoly, a startup-oriented educational card game created by Indri Dyrmishi, who is connected with the Carlson School of Management and the Technology Commercialization Office. What stood out about this concept was its focus on experiential learning. Rather than teaching entrepreneurship only through lectures or passive listening, the project encourages students to actively build, strategize, collaborate, and experience business model thinking in an interactive format. 

According to the project description, Startupoly was designed from the belief that students often learn more deeply when they actively participate in creating and experimenting rather than simply memorizing frameworks. The idea highlighted an important educational shift; entrepreneurship and innovation are not only theoretical subjects – but they are also processes best understood through practice, iteration, and engagement. Seeing a classroom-ready innovation tool designed to make entrepreneurial thinking more tangible was both creative and inspiring. 

The event also included projects connected to maker culture, commercialization, and emerging technologies. I explored demonstrations involving 3D printing, virtual reality equipment, startup learning tools, and innovation support initiatives such as ReLAB and University of Minnesota technology commercialization programs. These exhibits reflected how entrepreneurship is increasingly interdisciplinary. Engineering, environmental science, healthcare, business, information technology, and creative design are no longer operating separately, they are interacting together within innovation ecosystems. 

The one aspect I appreciated most about Founder’s Day was that it did not only showcase polished success stories. It also reflected experimentation, iteration, and learning. Some projects were in early stages, while others had already moved toward deployment, awards, or commercialization. Seeing this process helped normalize the reality that innovation often develops gradually through testing, collaboration, persistence, and feedback. 

The speakers and award presentations also reinforced the importance of resilience and initiative. Watching student founders explain their work and engage with attendees reminded me that opportunities often begin when individuals are willing to share ideas openly, even while those ideas are still developing. 

Another meaningful part of the experience was simply being physically present in an environment centered around ideas and discovery. Conversations at events like this create unexpected learning opportunities. Whether through networking, observing demonstrations, or discussing projects with presenters, these interactions can expand perspective in ways that online research alone cannot fully replicate. 

As someone interested in environmental science, GIS, communication, data analytics, and innovation, Founder’s Day 2026 felt both motivating and thought-provoking. It showed what interdisciplinary modern innovation has become and how different fields can contribute toward solving problems, improving systems, and creating meaningful impact. 

The experience left me reflecting not only on the technologies and startups presented, but also on the importance of curiosity, adaptability, collaboration, and continuous learning in shaping future opportunities.
