Editor-in-Chief
Job Description:
One-year commitment preferred. Minimum of 40 hours a month. $600 stipend per newspaper edition (10 editions per year).
Duties:
- Provides leadership; adheres to journalistic ethics; models good writing, editing and production skills; settles disputes and problems
- Represents the newspaper and acts as liaison to students, faculty, staff, university administration and the community
- Holds responsibility for the content and appearance of The Metropolitan’s print edition, website, Facebook page and OrgSync page; writes/maintains organizational bylaws, staff policy manual and training materials
- Recruits, hires, trains and leads team of 5 editors and numerous freelance writers
- Provides developmental editing and guidance to reporters according to Associated Press (AP) style
- Guides annual budget request, makes purchases, assists with payroll
- Writes at least one article for each issue of the newspaper
- Leads staff meetings and trainings
Preferred qualifications:
- Leadership or supervisory experience
- Strong writing, editing and proofreading skill
- Interest and engagement in higher education, public policy and current events
- Familiarity with Associated Press (AP) style
- Suggested courses: WRIT 371 Editing, WRIT 341 Writing the News in a Digital World
Candidates must be current Metropolitan State University students.
