On April 3rd, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled over 1,600 points—roughly 4%—following a major tariff announcement from the Trump administration. Just a month later, on May 5th, the market rebounded, surging more than 1,100 points, or 2.8%, after the U.S. and China agreed to temporarily reduce reciprocal tariffs. This volatility highlights the unpredictable nature of the stock market, and ever since these swings, I’ve received numerous questions from family and friends asking, “Should I still invest in such an uncertain market?”
Rather than my usual advice of diversification, I encouraged them to rebalance their portfolios, shifting towards safer, lower-risk investments. The ultimate takeaway? A greater emphasis on bonds and certificates of deposit (CDs). Of these options, I personally favor Treasury bills (T-bills) the most. Let’s explore what T-bills and CDs are—and why I believe T-bills hold the advantage.
What is a Treasury Bill (T-bill)?
A T-bill is a type of short-term government bond issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Sold at a discount, T-bills mature within a year, with available terms of 4, 8, 13, 17, 26, or 52 weeks. Unlike certificates of deposit (CDs), T-bills come with fewer restrictions, making them a flexible investment option. The minimum investment is $100, increasing in increments of $100.
One of the easiest ways to check the exact return on a T-bill is through TreasuryDirect.gov. For instance, as of now, the 13-week bill with CUSIP 912797PN1 carries a discount rate of 4.3%, meaning its price per $100 is $98.598444, with an issue date of May 15, 2025. This means that if you invest in this specific T-bill, you would pay $98.598444 on May 15, and in 13 weeks, you’d receive $100—earning a profit of $1.4016 per $100 invested.
While this might seem like a modest gain, scaling up changes the picture significantly. A million-dollar investment would yield a return of $14,016. Assuming the discount rate remains consistent and there are four 13-week cycles in a year, this investment could generate approximately $56,064 annually—an amount that closely aligns with the lower threshold of middle-class income in Minnesota.
What is a Certificate of Deposit (CD)?
A CD is similar to a savings account but comes with a fixed term—typically ranging from 3 to 14 months—during which funds cannot be withdrawn without penalty. Generally, the longer the term, the higher the interest rate. Most CDs also have minimum and maximum deposit requirements. Their interest rates tend to be higher than those of traditional savings accounts and are often comparable to the discount rates of Treasury bills (T-bills).
Why Do I Favor T-bills Over CDs?
There are two key reasons why I prefer T-bills over CDs:
Shorter Terms & Competitive Rates – T-bills offer shorter investment durations while maintaining strong returns. To achieve rates comparable to T-bills, most CDs require a 12-month commitment. Meanwhile, a 4-week T-bill already boasts a discount rate of 4.22%, making it a much more flexible option for investors who don’t want to lock in their money for an extended period.
Tax Advantages – T-bill earnings are exempt from state and local taxes, meaning only federal tax applies. In contrast, interest earned from CDs is subject to both federal and state income taxes, potentially reducing overall returns.
Final Thoughts
Both CDs and T-bills provide safe investment opportunities, offering protection from the unpredictability of the current stock market. However, for investors prioritizing flexibility and tax efficiency, T-bills are the superior choice.
On Friday, May 16, at 11:46 a.m., Metro State students and faculty were alerted to recent safety-related incidents reported by Minneapolis College Public Safety. In an email from Metro State Security Director Nathaniel Williams, it was revealed that three incidents occurred within the past week at the Minneapolis College campus, where Metro State leases instructional space.
The first two incidents involved motor vehicle thefts. The first occurred on May 10 around 3:00 a.m. in the Minneapolis College parking garage. The second theft took place on May 14, also around 3:00 a.m., near the Science Building on 13th Street. Both cases are currently under investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department.
The third incident, reported on May 13 at approximately 3:30 p.m., involved fondling near the vending machines on the first floor of the Technical Building. Minneapolis College Public Safety has secured video evidence and is increasing patrols in the area. The suspect has been barred from returning to campus.

On April 28th, Metro State University hosted an insightful presentation, available both in person and via Zoom, featuring Scott Borene and George C. Maxwell, Esq. from Borene Law Firm. This event served as a comprehensive follow-up to a discussion held earlier in the academic year, back in November, just before Donald Trump began his second term as president. During the presentation, both attorneys provided valuable legal guidance on how international and immigrant students can safeguard their rights and prepare for the years ahead under President Trump’s administration.
Scott Borene is the founder and managing attorney of Borene Law Firm. With over 35 years of experience in immigration law, he has earned recognition as one of “The Best Lawyers in America” and has consistently been named among the Top 20 Lawyers in the World. His expertise and dedication have solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the field of immigration law.
George C. Maxwell is a dedicated attorney working alongside Scott Borene at Borene Law Firm. Specializing in immigration law, he has been recognized for his expertise and was selected for inclusion in Minnesota Monthly’s 2024 list of Top Lawyers in Minnesota, highlighting his commitment to excellence in the field.
With increasing reports of international students facing visa revocations or detainment by ICE agents, concerns and uncertainty continue to rise across the U.S. In their presentation, Borene and Maxwell offered valuable legal guidance to help students navigate these challenges. Simply put, staying cautious and well-informed is essential. If you are an international or immigrant student, avoid any legal trouble, ensure that all documentation is properly registered and up to date, and remain vigilant. While each case is unique, taking proactive steps can help protect your status during these uncertain times.
When discussing domestic travel, Maxwell emphasized the importance of keeping all documentation updated and accurate, as well as exercising caution with social media activity. Regarding mobile devices, he advised against carrying a personal phone, as authorities may confiscate and search it. If bringing a phone is necessary, opting for a burner phone can help safeguard sensitive information and privacy.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your status and need legal assistance, Borene Law Firm offers a 15-minute meeting where you can speak with one of their attorneys. To schedule an appointment, contact their office at (612) 321-0082 and mention that you would like a “mini” consultation.

Just outside the Twin Cities, the small town of St. Francis has become a focal point in the escalating battle against censorship. Cherished books that once broadened students’ horizons are vanishing from library shelves, banned under a district policy that delegates censorship decisions to a contentious book-rating website. Remarkably, this all traces back to a local election with minimal voter turnout.
Books like The Handmaid’s Tale,The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and A Court of Thorns and Roses were recently removed from St. Francis Area Schools’ libraries. This change stems from a 2024 school board policy that relies on ratings from RatedBooks.org—a crowdsourced site lacking formal educational oversight—instead of input from educators or the community.
A local parent shared that the site permits a select group of pre-approved reviewers to submit book reports, but “there are no academic standards,” she explained. Books featuring LGBTQ+ characters or authored by people of color frequently receive disproportionately high “concern” scores, resulting in their automatic removal from St. Francis school libraries.
Even books with uplifting messages and suitable themes for young readers are being targeted. For instance, the young adult novel Moxie would be banned under St. Francis’s current policy due to its rating. One so-called “controversial” quote used to justify its removal reads: “This is what it means to be a feminist… girls supporting each other and wanting to be treated like human beings in a world that’s always finding ways to tell them they’re not.” It’s not just explicit content being censored—it’s the exchange of ideas and the pursuit of knowledge.
The parent I spoke with, who has two children in the district, has been actively opposing the ban since learning about it. In just a few weeks, she helped mobilize a grassroots movement with 150 community members. “Previously, parents could voice concerns, and we’d have a dialogue,” she explained. “Now, if RatedBooks gives a rating of three or higher, the book is removed—no discussion, no community involvement.”
Critics argue that this kind of censorship erodes the foundation of public education by narrowing the perspectives students are exposed to and limiting their understanding of the world.
Alex Eble, an associate professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College, highlights the transformative power of books, noting that they can profoundly impact students when they see themselves represented. He explains, “What people see shapes who they become, their self-perception, and their beliefs about others.” Eble emphasizes that a lack of equitable representation deprives individuals of envisioning the vast opportunities the future holds for everyone.
Pamela A. Mason, a lecturer at Harvard, cautions that book bans restrict access to diverse and varied literature. She emphasizes that this limitation is especially harmful to young readers who rely on books to explore their identities, values, and the broader world. Conversations about these books with family members, peers, and trusted adults further enrich their understanding and growth.
This issue extends far beyond St. Francis—it’s a nationwide concern, with hundreds of school districts affected in recent years. If proponents of these book bans continue to dominate school board elections, the trend will persist. With St. Francis’s next school board elections slated for 2026, residents have an opportunity to take action. That means not just voting, but stepping up as candidates, critically evaluating those running, and asking tough questions. It’s about understanding who truly advocates for students and who is advancing their own agendas.
As a political science student, I’ve come to understand that democracy isn’t confined to Washington—it begins at the local level. Casting votes in school board meetings and small-town elections is one of the most impactful ways to safeguard culture, education, and critical thinking within our communities.
Book bans are just the start. When stories disappear, voices are silenced. Failing to show up to vote risks erasing history. It’s our duty to protect our culture and knowledge, ensuring future generations can experience the voices that shaped us as children.
Take a stand against book bans in St. Francis schools by joining the community at this upcoming event. Together, we can make a difference!
Graduation is a milestone where students celebrate the culmination of their academic journey, taking their well-earned walk across the stage to receive their degree. Surrounded by proud family and friends, they mark the transition from one chapter to the next, stepping into the professional world with new opportunities ahead.
Standing on stage in my robe and tasseled cap, diploma in hand, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy—my hard work had finally paid off. As I looked ahead, countless paths seemed to unfold before me, each leading to new possibilities. It was as if I had spread my wings, ready to soar toward something greater. The world is mine to explore, filled with endless opportunities waiting just beyond the horizon.
Graduating brings a mix of emotions, as leaving college means stepping back into full adult responsibilities. Despite years of preparation, the challenges of adulthood—filing taxes, paying bills, job hunting, and building a stable life—feel far more daunting than coursework and campus life ever did.
Are adult responsibilities hard because I lack experience, or are they designed to be? I no longer know. As reality twists around me, the dread of handling them makes me miss the structured world of my master’s studies.
As a 27-year-old graduate, my aspirations feel more measured than celebratory. While achievement is meant to bring joy, my outlook is shaped by experience, making this milestone feel less like an ending and more like a new set of challenges.
Before my studies, I believed that following the straight-and-narrow path would ensure a stable future and a fulfilling life.
The world feels far more chaotic and unpredictable, with economic instability and a volatile job market threatening livelihoods in an instant. Despite my qualifications, the uncertainty makes me question what’s truly worth pursuing. As the excitement of graduation fades, I sit in my bedroom, overwhelmed by a sinking feeling—Now what? In my final days in America, my mind raced with endless questions about the future.
“What’s next for me? Will I be okay? Am I truly ready for this opportunity?” These questions may not serve my self-worth in the long run, but I am determined to find their answers as I begin this new chapter back home. My journey forward marks the start of something unknown—whether it leads to fields of roses or landmines remains to be seen.
To my fellow graduates: Happy graduation, and best of luck to you all.
Metro State University went into lockdown on Friday, May 1, 2025, at approximately 12:38 P.M., after St. Paul police responded to reports of gunfire involving a man allegedly targeting his mother.
According to authorities, the incident began when a 22-year-old man and his mother were arguing at their home in the 300 block of Maria Avenue. After she told him to leave, he walked away. When the woman later left in her vehicle, she saw her son again—at which point he fired a shot at her. The bullet struck the vehicle but missed her.
Distressed, the mother and bystanders called 911, prompting police to issue a lockdown at Metro State University while officers searched for the suspect. Within approximately 20 minutes, authorities located and arrested the man at his family’s residence, securing his handgun in the process.
The university lifted its lockdown at 12:58 P.M. after Founders Hall—initially at the center of the security response—was cleared.
“I’m thankful no one was hurt and that everyone is safe,” Metro State President Ginny Arthur said in a statement. “I’m grateful for the swift response by law enforcement and our campus safety team.”
During the lockdown, university officials emailed students and faculty with emergency guidance:
Run to safety if possible.
Hide if the assailant is near your location. Barricade doors as quickly and quietly as possible.
Fight if the assailant enters your space and there is an imminent threat.
They also advised silencing electronics, turning off lights, and remaining quiet until authorities lifted the lockdown.
A separate email mistakenly reported a power outage in one of the campus buildings—an error later acknowledged by President Arthur.
“A notification of a power outage on [the] St. Paul Campus was sent in error,” she stated. “We will be conducting a thorough review of our safety procedures in light of this incident.”
Authorities urge students to stay vigilant and follow campus updates. Support services are available for those needing assistance. More information can be found on Metro State University’s official website or by contacting campus security.
Faith Wilson, a fellow screenwriting student at Metro State University, and I have shared a few courses over the past few semesters. Recently, I had the opportunity to interview him about his personal journey through the screenwriting program at Metro State. Our conversation began with his initial interest in film and how it ultimately led him to choose screenwriting as his major.
During his childhood, Wilson often channeled his unique imagination into writing. As an only child who spent much of his time playing alone, he would craft stories using toys and even inanimate objects—a creative habit many of us can recall from our own early years. One pivotal insight he shared was his aversion to any writing that wasn’t rooted in creativity. This deep-seated passion for imaginative storytelling became a driving force that steered him toward a future in screenwriting.
As time went on, Wilson’s passion for creative writing took a backseat as other interests and sports began to dominate his life. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at St. Cloud State University to complete his general education courses, but quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit for him. Taking a couple of years off, Wilson explored different creative writing outlets, such as short stories and novels, but found the process overwhelming. Eventually, he discovered the foundational tools and resources available in screenwriting, a format he felt was the “perfect fit” to unleash his creative mind.
Prior to his days at Metro State, Wilson found an Intro to Screenwriting class available at North Hennepin Community College (NHCC). There, he learned the fundamentals of screenwriting. However, he soon realized that there were no further classes or programs at NHCC, so Wilson discovered the four-year program for screenwriting at Metro State. Intrigued by the program, the academic standing of the school, and the overall environment; he decided to apply and enroll at Metro State for the screenwriting program.
Upon arriving at Metro State, Wilson connected with Associate Professor Jeremy Bandow, the head of the screenwriting department. He recognized Bandow as an outstanding professor with the potential to elevate his skills to “the next level.” Wilson admires Bandow’s extensive background and experience, as well as his commitment to sharing his expertise with students. Known for his “hands-on” approach, Professor Bandow ensures students dive into their scripts early in the process. His teaching style emphasizes direct discussion and open communication, creating an engaging and interactive learning environment.
With the skills he’s been honing in the screenwriting program, Wilson has crafted numerous scripts, many of which have progressed through second and third drafts. He hopes that the techniques and knowledge gained from his classes will pave the way for opportunities in the film and television industry. While he remains optimistic about finding a gig or writing opportunity, Professor Bandow often shares the tough realities of breaking into the industry, drawing from his own experiences.
Wilson explained that Bandow emphasizes the challenges of navigating the tightly knit filmmaking world, where close connections are essential and securing a spot with a major studio can be incredibly difficult. Although this perspective may seem a bit pessimistic, it provides invaluable insight into what to expect and how to handle rejection in such a competitive field. Having taken some of the same courses alongside Faith, I’ve also gained an understanding of the numerous hurdles screenwriters face—budgets, query letters, pitch decks, and countless other challenges—all in pursuit of having our scripts recognized.
As Wilson progresses through the screenwriting program at Metro State, he continues to refine his resumé, preparing for the challenges of the film and television industry. With graduation just around the corner, he’s optimistic that the skills he’s gained will serve him well as he steps into the grand world of filmmaking. Bringing a script to life on screen is no small feat, and earning audience admiration is an even greater challenge. I wish the best of luck to Faith as he pursues his dreams in the film industry. Wilson’s feature screenplay, Past Transgressions is currently on Metro State’s Lakes List.
When the first episodes of The Penguin aired, Penguin actor Colin Farrell warned audiences that by the finale, they’d loathe his character. Boy, was he spot on.
What makes The Penguin such a gripping and thrilling series is its unwavering ability to engage viewers from the get-go. Despite initial doubts about the appeal of a supporting character from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the show captivated audiences without a single dull moment. Every scene felt purposefully crafted, offering deeper insights into the characters.
Oz Cobb, in particular, is brought to life with meticulous care, as this series provides a rich backstory that reveals Cobb’s cunning nature, despite his seemingly unassuming demeanor. While previous portrayals of The Penguin, such as Burgess Meredith’s comic-accurate version in the 1960s TV show, Danny DeVito’s quirky take in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, and Robin Lord Taylor’s complex portrayal in the TV show Gotham, each had their unique flair, Colin Farrell’s interpretation stands out for its realism. Farrell’s Penguin is a borderline psychopath, single-mindedly focused on his self-interest. His ruthlessness hinted at in The Batman through his interactions with Carmine Falcone, becomes fully apparent in this series.
Cobb’s relationship with his mother, played by Deirdre O’Connell, adds another layer of complexity. He craves her validation rather than her love, highlighted poignantly when he dances with Carmen Ejogo’s Eve Karlo, Cobb’s lady friend, dressed in his mother’s clothes, during the finale. Oz Cobb is both clever and pitiable—a man whose need for validation drives his every action, establishing him as a formidable threat in Gotham. The conclusion of the series solidifies his transformation into the Penguin, and I eagerly await his role in The Batman Part II.
One standout character from the series is Sofia Falcone, portrayed by Cristin Milioti. Her character, molded by her father’s legacy, endured a decade in Arkham for crimes she didn’t commit, only to emerge despised and feared. Sofia’s story is a heartbreaking tale of injustice and resilience, leaving me hopeful for her eventual revenge against Cobb. A letter from her half-sister hints at her return, adding a glimmer of hope to her tragic arc.
Victor Aguliar, an original character played by Rhenzy Feliz, puzzled me initially. His role became clear in the final episode—he was a testament to Cobb’s ruthlessness. Despite his loyalty, Aguliar meets a tragic end, demonstrating that nobody is safe from Cobb’s ambition.
In summary, The Penguin is a five-star show that brilliantly extends The Batman universe while remaining a strong standalone masterpiece. With its unexpected twists and engaging storytelling, it keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. I eagerly await the continuation in The Batman Part II, set for release in 2026.
On a lighter note, my dad spotted Cristin Milioti at a pub in Ireland with Domhnall Gleeson in September 2023, during the SAG strike—a fun tidbit while she was on a break from filming this incredible series.
American politics has taken an unexpected turn since the start of the second Trump
administration. President Trump has entertained the idea of acquiring Greenland, adding Canada
as the 51st state, reclaiming the Panama Canal, and now, considering taking Gaza from the
Palestinians. These proposals suggest a new era of imperialism. How will these actions impact
Americans and citizens abroad? We must examine the finer details of each case to understand the
potential consequences.
First, the consideration of acquiring Greenland has been a topic of discussion since President
Trump took office. Mette Fredriksen, Denmark’s Prime Minister, has repeatedly stated that
Greenland is not for sale. While the idea of taking Greenland from Denmark may seem abrupt,
there is some rationale behind this endeavor. With the Arctic ice melting rapidly due to climate
change, rare metals and minerals like lithium, uranium, graphite, gold, and several others are
becoming accessible. Many of these resources remain untouched, and the extent of their deposits
is still unknown. Naturally, the prospect of economic gain is a driving factor behind President
Trump’s interest. There is also concern about potential trade routes and business opportunities if
more Arctic ice melts. For now, Fredriksen stands firm, refusing to let Greenland go easily,
despite President Trump’s threats to use “military force” to take it from Denmark.
Another idea President Trump has entertained is annexing Canada as the “51st state”. Like
Fredriksen, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly stated, “You can’t take our
country,” especially after Canada beat the U.S. in the 4 Nations hockey championship. Trudeau
continues to express his respect for the U.S. and his desire to maintain a friendly and trading
relationship, but President Trump has different plans for their alliance. He believes annexing
Canada would address the U.S.’s financial losses in trade and capitalize on Canada’s oil reserves.
President Trump also cites immigration concerns and drug trafficking between the nations as
reasons for annexation. While the idea of merging the two countries is implausible, fostering
stronger ties between them would be a more sensible approach.
Additionally, there would be numerous logistical challenges concerning laws, regulations, and
governance if the two countries were to merge. Would Canada become a single state, or would its
provinces be divided into individual states? How would the economy be impacted by the sudden
addition of 38 million people? Many issues would need to be addressed, and it would
undoubtedly be a long and grueling process.
The concept of reclaiming the Panama Canal has also been mentioned recently. It’s unclear
whether the aim is to take over the entire nation like Greenland or Canada, but the primary target
is the famous trade route. In 2022, Panama recorded the highest number of ships passing through
the canal, with 14,200 vessels. President Trump believes China “is running” the canal and thatthe U.S. is losing significant revenue due to tolls and trading deals. The rise in tolls is attributed
to a lack of water in recent years and basic supply and demand principles. When supply
decreases and demand exceeds capacity, costs rise for the producer, who then passes them on to
the consumer. It’s Economics 101 when it comes to these niche issues regarding trade, tariffs, and
international tolls. With China’s involvement, there appears to be close ties between China and
Panama, posing an economic threat to the United States. This could lead to labor violations and
corruption if China gains more influence in the region, potentially causing widespread issues,
especially for ordinary citizens. The canal cannot be locked down or stopped; it must continue to
handle imports and exports daily. So, how would the U.S. obtain the canal? Would it be by force
or negotiation? Or do we simply need better conversations with Panama compared to China?
Only time will tell.
The most concerning idea is the plan for Gaza and the Palestinians. The notion of creating a
Mar-a-Lago-style resort in Gaza could be devastating for everyone in the region, including the
U.S. Over 2 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip, and resettling them would be an
enormous and laborious task. President Trump has proposed that Egypt, Jordan, and other
neighboring nations take in the Palestinians. He envisions transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of
the Middle East,” filled with hotels and resorts. This plan seems inhumane and undemocratic,
offering a degrading solution to a complex issue. The U.S. establishing a presence in such a tense
environment could spell disaster for Americans and potentially U.S. troops if they are sent to
take over the region.
In response, warranted pushback from our allies has been directed at President Trump. The
leaders of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt have all called out President Trump, suggesting that
Palestine be recognized as a state and given long-term protection. Unfortunately, President
Trump dismissed these concerns and remains hyper-focused on his plan to take over Gaza.
Recently, President Trump posted an A.I.-generated video of his envisioned “remake” of Gaza,
featuring cruise ships, Elon Musk, resorts, and a golden statue of himself. This all adds up to a
sinister plan to remove and cleanse millions of Palestinians from their homes. This is
unreasonable, as it is unlikely they would leave easily, and no American could rightfully support
this with their tax dollars.
With all these proposals, it seems to contradict Trump’s ambition of “America first”; instead, it
appears to be “spread America more” across the globe. These takeovers reflect a past of
colonialism and imperialism, reminiscent of when the U.S. took over many Pacific islands and
meddled in Central and South America. The administration is currently negotiating a deal to end
the Russia-Ukraine war. This might come at a cost, as Trump avoids openly calling Russian
President Vladimir Putin a “dictator” and blames Ukraine for starting the war, despite Russia’s
invasion of Ukraine in 2022. If Ukraine has to concede territory to Russia, it would be a terrible
blow to the Ukrainian people and Europe alike. President Trump skirts around the issue when it
comes to Putin and Russia, perhaps drawing a comparison between the two leaders since theyboth seek land. The age of imperialism was thought to be left behind in the last century; yet we
seem to be heading towards an unexpected crash course with the President Trump and his
If those who hold the knowledge hold the power, should we be concerned when the world’s greatest powers compete for dominance in artificial intelligence?
By Paulo Cabral on February 2025
Whoever controls the Artificial Intelligence industry and manages to consolidate the most widely used language model and the standardization of today’s networks will undoubtedly be the most powerful. Since this industry has no cooperation or spirit of development, what is left then? What exists is an uphill battle supported by billions of dollars, whose sole objective is to consolidate the most standardized AI ecosystem possible. For this, it depends on the innovations and developments in technology, business, health, education, finance, and government.
While OpenAI, Nvidia, Google, and some of the main AI companies have built a discourse around the high cost and computing power needed to consolidate this technology, China has come to break everything with DeepSeek: it was created with a fraction of the money and a minimal part of the technology of ChatGPT, in addition to being open source and free to the world.
Round 1
DeepSeek marked the beginning of a technological cold war between China and the United States. Both nations are racing to develop general Artificial Intelligence that not only surpasses human intelligence but can also tackle humanity’s most pressing questions and problems. However, this pursuit comes with a significant risk: the possibility of the technology becoming uncontrollable.
What unfolds next is a significant conflict: OpenAI, Nvidia, and other leading technology companies attribute the chaos to DeepSeek. Taiwan, with its burgeoning microchip and processor industry, emerges as the crown jewel in this new historical chapter. The United States responds by blocking DeepSeek and any associated AI, imposing sanctions on countries that utilize or integrate the technology. Indeed, it triggers a domino effect.
Many are asking: why all the panic? The answer lies in the potential implications: if China has indeed discovered a more cost-effective and efficient method for developing artificial intelligence, Silicon Valley’s massive investments in hardware and supercomputers might be rendered obsolete. This scenario spells trouble for the American economy.
The crisis
Recently, a seismic event disrupted international markets and reshaped the geopolitical landscape of artificial intelligence. A Chinese company announced the development of an AI model for a mere US$6 million, capable of rivaling American giants such as ChatGPT, Meta, and Google—companies that have each invested over US$1 billion in their respective AI advancements. To add to the upheaval, DeepSeek made its model open source, enabling anyone to modify and adapt it freely.
The White House has swiftly responded to the news, with spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt announcing that the National Security Council is assessing the strategic implications of DeepSeek. For President Donald Trump’s administration, the emergence of this new Chinese competitor is a “wake-up call” for American industry. In a speech to Republican congressmen, President Trump emphasized the urgent need for the U.S. to reclaim its leadership and supremacy in the sector.
Experts have likened the rise of DeepSeek to a “Sputnik moment,” referencing the profound impact the launch of the first Soviet satellite had on the U.S. during the Cold War space race (1947-1991). The fact that a supposedly small Chinese startup managed to develop an efficient AI model without the vast resources available to large American companies has raised doubts among investors about the true technological advantage of the U.S. Consequently, this development has significantly affected the market value of American tech giants.
A global risk factor
Some global consequences have already been observed. The Australian government has banned the use of the Chinese AI model in government devices, citing an “unacceptable risk” to national security. Similarly, other government institutions in various countries, including Taiwan, Italy, and even the U.S. Navy, have restricted the installation and use of this technology.
Countries are increasingly concerned about information leaks and security breaches, which have already taken place. It is essential to understand what personal data is collected, the sources of this data, the purposes for its use, the legal basis for processing it, and whether the data is stored on servers in China. DeepSeek is under suspicion for using user data to train its AI and for lacking a defined legal basis, thereby violating principles of transparency and information obligations.
In light of China’s technological advancements and censorship, the West appears to face two options: the first, a purely technological approach accompanied by censorship; and the second, a technological path grounded in values, allowing for the free circulation of different versions in the West, including participation from China, but still accepting censorship.
Round 2
This would be an uneven struggle, a kind of “cultural battle,” waged differently in the West and China. Historical experiences with communist countries show that they do not easily yield on ideological and cultural grounds, viewing the defense of their principles as a dam that must not crack, because eventually it will break—but it always does. What will the West accept in this new scenario?
One of the primary concerns regarding DeepSeek is the potential use of AI for state control and surveillance. Developed in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, the technology is backed by a robust digital surveillance system aimed at sustaining the power of the communist regime. Additionally, there are apprehensions about the collection and storage of data by the AI, as the company’s privacy policy explicitly states that user information is stored on servers in China, under the jurisdiction of the Xi Jinping regime.
Although DeepSeek is open source, there are concerns about censorship mechanisms built into the technology. While Western models, such as ChatGPT, are criticized only for ideological biases and restrictions on certain topics, DeepSeek has even stricter prior censorship, which filters out information that goes against the interests of the Beijing regime (such as topics about the Tiananmen Square Massacre, Taiwan independence, and criticisms and nicknames made of that communist dictator).
Are the costs worth it?
Financial firms have warned that the emergence of DeepSeek could trigger a reassessment of billion-dollar investments in AI. In the short term, markets should brace for a period of volatility as investors reevaluate the value of AI-related companies, including giants such as Nvidia.
In 2024, U.S. companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta spent hundreds of billions of dollars developing new AI models. Now, investors are questioning whether these high costs are still justifiable in the face of supposedly cheaper competitors.
Adding to the crisis, OpenAI has announced an investigation into whether the Chinese startup trained its new chatbot using the artificial intelligence model previously created by the Silicon Valley-based company. In an official statement, OpenAI revealed that in recent months, it has detected several attempts by Chinese entities to extract large volumes of data from its AI tools2. “It is vitally important that we work closely with the U.S. government to better protect our most capable models from efforts by rivals and competitors to seize American technology,” the document reads. It also directly accuses China-based companies of “constantly attempting to distill the models of leading U.S. AI companies”
The winner is…
In this way, the rivalry between the United States and China in the domain of AI reflects a new technological cold war, in which both nations seek to consolidate their supremacy in this strategic field. Trump’s recent policies and DeepSeek’s advances illustrate the intensification of this contest, with significant implications for the future of technology and the global economy.
The AI race is a battle for influence and power. AI has the potential to transform economies, military strategies, and even global narratives. Unlike the nuclear arms race, there is no clear end. The crucial question is not simply who will win, but how this competition will shape our future. Will it inspire unprecedented innovation and collaboration, or deepen existing divisions? The AI race is on now, and its outcome will define the 21st century.
