Feng Shui: Discover the Secrets to Harmonize Your Home

Have you ever felt uncomfortable even though you were inside your own home? Well, Feng Shui is an excellent way to control the negative energy that a place carries, even improving the well-being of all residents.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice rooted in the art, science, and wisdom of achieving harmony and balance among elements. It extends beyond mere aesthetics or creating a cozy space—it focuses on the flow of energy within a home, promoting both physical and mental well-being for its inhabitants.

Feng Shui, which translates to “wind” (feng) and “water” (shui) in Chinese, is based on the energy of these two elements. Its purpose is to create Taoist harmony—an essential concept in Chinese philosophy—by balancing energy between environments and individuals. Commonly applied in interior design, Feng Shui techniques aim to enhance the energy of a space, which in turn can positively influence personal relationships within the home. Closely connected to nature, this practice often incorporates elements such as natural stones, crystals, plants, and water fountains, making them highly recommended for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Bagua

Bagua is a symbolic map applied to a home’s floor plan to identify and enhance harmony in each room. Each section, known as a gua, represents a different aspect of life, influencing energy flow within the space. These areas include career, spirituality, family, prosperity, success, relationships, creativity, friendships, and health.

The nine guas and their corresponding elements and colors are:

  1. Career – Element: Water; Color: Black/Dark Blue
  2. Spirituality and Wisdom – Element: Earth; Color: Light Blue/Beige
  3. Family – Element: Wood; Color: Green
  4. Prosperity – Element: Wood; Color: Purple
  5. Success and Recognition – Element: Fire; Color: Red
  6. Relationships – Element: Earth; Color: Pink
  7. Creativity and Children – Element: Metal; Color: White
  8. Friends and Travel – Element: Metal; Color: Gray
  9. Center/Health – Element: Earth; Color: Yellow

The Bagua areas are arranged in a structured pattern that can be applied to the floor plan of your home or even a single room. To use the Bagua effectively, start by obtaining or sketching your home’s floor plan, ensuring the rooms are as proportional as possible.

Elements of Feng Shui

The five elements of Feng Shui—fire, water, earth, metal, and wood—are fundamental to achieving balance and harmony. Known as phases of transformation, these elements originate from nature and are believed to influence specific areas of the human body in Chinese philosophy. When properly aligned, they help establish inner equilibrium and promote positive energy flow within a space.

  • Wood represents growth and vitality. It is strengthened by water, which nourishes it, but can be weakened by fire and metal.
  • Fire is dynamic and powerful, spreading in all directions. It requires wood to exist but can be extinguished by water. Since fire does not naturally occur without a source, it must be handled with care in Feng Shui.
  • Metal is strong and rigid, often associated with prosperity through materials like silver and gold. It is inflexible in relation to other elements.
  • Water is fluid yet powerful, capable of shaping landscapes and influencing energy flow. It symbolizes communication and success but can also lead to destruction if uncontrolled.
  • Earth is the foundation of stability, representing gravity and nourishment. It supports growth but can be affected by both fire and wood—such as tree roots absorbing nutrients from the soil.

Applicability

Feng Shui in the living room emphasizes the use of chromotherapy, meaning that every color plays a significant role in shaping the energy of the space. Each hue carries a distinct influence, contributing to harmony, balance, and the overall ambiance of the room. Thoughtful color selection can enhance positivity, promote relaxation, and create a welcoming atmosphere that aligns with the desired energy flow in the home.

While light colors convey peace, darker and stronger colors are more social, stimulating creativity and dialogue. So, keep a balance!

When arranging furniture in the living room, the placement of the sofa is especially important. Ideally, it should be positioned against a wall rather than with its back facing the entrance, as this creates a sense of security and stability in the space. If this arrangement isn’t possible, consider placing additional furniture behind the sofa to support the flow of energy and maintain balance within the room.

Arranging the sofa in an “L” or “U” shape creates a welcoming atmosphere, giving the impression of warmth and connection while maintaining good energy circulation throughout the space.

Don’t overlook empty corners in the living room—leaving them unoccupied can lead to energy stagnation. To prevent this, consider placing a potted plant, a sculpture, or a small table to enhance the flow of positive energy.

For wall décor, choose vibrant and cheerful artwork, even abstract pieces, to promote a sense of optimism and high spirits. Incorporating images of cherished memories—such as family moments or travels—can serve as a source of encouragement, reinforcing focus and perseverance toward personal goals.

Another meaningful addition is the Feng Shui mirror, which symbolizes protection and is best placed above the front door. Considered a healing element, this mirror is often framed in gold, silver, or copper, materials associated with prosperity and positive energy.

Feng Shui in the Bedroom

The bed is the most important element in Feng Shui for the bedroom, and its placement significantly impacts energy flow. Ideally, it should be positioned away from the door, ensuring that your feet do not face it, as this arrangement is believed to help maintain vitality and promote restful sleep.

Additionally, avoid placing the bed directly against the wall, as this allows energy to circulate freely during sleep. A headboard is highly recommended, as it provides support and stability, helping you wake up feeling refreshed. Wooden headboards, in particular, serve as a protective barrier against external influences and the coldness of the wall.

Minimize work-related items and electronic devices in the bedroom, as they can interfere with relaxation. Even when powered off, these devices emit radiation that may impact physical and spiritual well-being. Keeping them out of the sleeping area helps create a peaceful, restorative environment.

Lighting also plays a crucial role in setting the mood of the space. Prioritize natural light during the day to refresh and energize the room. For artificial lighting, opt for warm, soft illumination to encourage relaxation and deeper sleep.

Feng Shui in the Bathroom

To maintain positive energy in the bathroom, always keep the door closed and the toilet lid down. Cleanliness and organization are essential, so store items like brushes and accessories in baskets or organizer boxes to prevent clutter. Avoid overcrowding the space with too many objects, as excess items can disrupt the flow of energy. Additionally, ensure that the bathroom door is not directly facing other rooms to prevent energy from being drained from those areas.

Feng Shui in the Kitchen

In the kitchen, the stove is the key element, much like the sofa in the living room. The person cooking should be able to see the door and should never have their back to it, as this positioning can create a sense of vulnerability. The stove should also not be aligned with the entrance; if repositioning is not an option, placing a multifaceted crystal between the door and the stove can help correct the energy imbalance.

And Finally…

Bringing Feng Shui into your home requires patience and commitment. Old habits may try to pull you back, making it easy to believe that “I am a disaster by nature.” Stay focused and embrace the fresh energies flowing into your space, allowing them to bring peace, balance, and harmony to your home.

The Other Boleyn Girl

The other day, I was walking my dog around my neighborhood when I came across a Little Free Library. Curious, I took a peek inside to see if anything would catch my eye. My eyes landed on “The Other Boleyn Girl”, a historical fiction novel written by Phillipa Gregory, who is an English historical novelist, best known for her works “The Other Boleyn Girl,” “The White Queen,” and “The Red Queen,” among others. I have always been fascinated by history and what things were like in different parts of the world, so I picked it up right away.

This book is set in Tudor England (1520s-1530s), during King Henry VIII’s reign. The main character is Mary Boleyn, one of the three famous Boleyn children, which include Mary, Anne, and their brother, George. At the beginning of the story, Mary, the main character, is already married to her first husband, William Carey.

As the book progresses, it shows the rise and fall of the Boleyn family, following the romantic endeavors of the famous sisters. To spare the details, there is an abundance of drama in this book. If you love drama but prefer a slow, detailed story and plotline, this book is for you.

I like that the book brings attention to the lesser-known Boleyn sister, Mary. I think that most people have heard of Anne Boleyn. She was the second queen consort to King Henry VIII but was later accused of adultery and sentenced to death by beheading. I feel that not as many people have heard of Mary or her story, as she played an important role in creating the image of the Boleyn family we have today.

There is a lot of intrigue and history in this novel, and it was such a fun read! If you are into historical fiction, or interested in English history, I would recommend this book. It is a bit of a long read, coming in at 672 pages, but if you are ready to sit for a while and dig deep into a book, it is a great choice.

If you aren’t much of a reader, there is also a movie by the same name you can watch! It’s available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV, as well as on YouTube. It stars Scarlett Johannson and Natalie Portman, along with cameos from other famous actors. 

Fusion: Our Saving Grace?

It was reported on January 20, 2025, that China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) device conducted a nuclear fusion test lasting up to 1,066 seconds. This is a massive breakthrough in the race to create unlimited energy for the masses. Greenhouse gas emissions have been destroying our planet since the Industrial Revolution. This test could inspire hope for future generations by showing that we can develop the ultimate power source for all of humanity. However, researchers have noted that the process of harnessing nuclear fusion on a large scale is still decades away.

But what is nuclear fusion? It’s the process of two hydrogen atoms combining to create vast amounts of energy. The sun and other stars throughout the universe use this process to create energy and heat for their surrounding planets. It is a self-sustaining process, capable of regenerating itself for billions of years. The fourth state of matter, plasma, is the crucial resource required to sustain and operate for millennia, as it makes up 99% of the known universe. 

However, there may be some roadblocks when it comes to nuclear fusion. For starters, the infrastructure to build the fusion reactors will cost billions of dollars and may require partnerships with private companies. If proper funding is secured, the issue of sustaining the infrastructure will be a tall task. When the two atoms fuse, they will heat up to 180,000,000 degrees Fahrenheit, so the technology will need to be able to endure that heat for long periods of time. In addition, containing radioactive elements is another issue to address when it comes to fusion reactors, especially the large amount of tritium needed to fuel the reactor. Because tritium is made from lithium, the reactor will need hundreds of grams of tritium to operate.

The long-term benefits of nuclear fusion energy could save our planet and steer us away from toxic greenhouse gases. With production and research in mind, the first tests of long-sustaining reactors aren’t going to happen until the 2040 timeframe. Nuclear fusion is no simple task, and more attention should be brought to it as technology progresses and develops. Preventive measures to mitigate long-term damage to the Earth need to remain in place until the large-scale manufacturing of fusion reactors is established within the next 20-30 years. While speaking at a TED Talk, Johan Rockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, mentioned that we want to avoid certain “tipping points” when it comes to climate change, as any slight increase in temperature could lead to devastating effects by the 22nd century (14:52).

Obviously, we could invest in solar and wind to provide some breathing room when it comes to energy cleanliness and efficiency. Electric vehicles still rely on precious metals and retain some loose connections to fossil fuels, so cleaner uses of energy must be kept in mind. Nuclear fusion technology could be the key to a better future, so why not take the risk?

Imagine, sometime in the near future we could drive cars or fly planes without the worry of dumping enormous amounts of dirty fuel into the air. Fusion could change everyone’s lives for the better! This could lead to an end to conflicts over fuel and energy if nations agree to the use of fusion in our everyday lives. Fusion could assist in cleaning our water of harmful bacteria and chemicals. Both industry and agriculture across the world could benefit significantly from fusion, providing warmth and coolness in extreme environments. Just think about all the possibilities for humans as a collective if we could achieve ultimate energy through fusion.

It won’t be easy or quick, but it could change the world for the better, especially if the right minds and the proper resources are put into such projects related to fusion. The positive outlook on this technology outweighs any negative possibilities if done right. The reactors will be large and consuming, but over time they will shrink and move with ease as technology progresses. It is essential to be mindful of ourselves and understand what we are capable of. We cannot let loose cannons prevail and curb an improved future for this world. 

What is ‘The Great American Game’? Kendrick Lamar’s Halftime Show Reveals the Answer

On Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025, hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar performed at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Louisiana. Lamar’s performance will be remembered for years to come, as he opened it with the epic line: “The revolution ‘bout to be televised / You picked the right time, but the wrong guy.”

According to Billboard Magazine, Lamar’s halftime performance attracted nearly 133.5 million viewers, becoming the most-watched halftime show in Super Bowl history. 

Performing his greatest hits from “Squabble Up” to “T.V. Off”, there was a deeper message presented on Lamar’s stage. Right off the bat, audiences were introduced to actor Samuel L. Jackson’s version of Uncle Sam, who welcomed them to “The Great American Game.” Jackson’s appearance didn’t stop there though, as throughout Lamar’s performance, he criticized Lamar for “being too loud” or “too ghetto.” In addition, there were guest appearances from former Tennis player Serena Williams, who performed her infamous crip walk from 2012, along with the famous singer, SZA, who duetted with Lamar in his songs “Luther” and “All the Stars”.

The stage was set up like a game controller. The show began with Lamar perched up on a shiny Cadillac and slowly, dancers poured out of it. Throughout the 13-minute performance, audiences were taken through various stages of said game. When the show began, it was upbeat and hyped, building up the anticipation. That was, until Uncle Sam broke in and demanded Lamar and his dancers to “tighten up”. They complied with Uncle Sam’s request, slowing things down for SZA’s performance. Lamar then performed his Grammy award winning hit, “Not Like Us,” a proclaimed “diss track” aimed at another popular rapper, Drake, referencing their long feud in the industry. The performance ended with Lamar’s “TV Off”, signaling that the game was over. 

But what did Uncle Sam mean when he welcomed us to “The Great American Game?” Many would think that it was a simple reference to the American football game taking place that night. However, that did not seem to be the case. Truthfully, it could have been about the ongoing climate in the nation, as we are currently in President Donald Trump’s second term. Or it could be about the racial inequality that has existed since the birth of the nation. Regardless, “The Great American Game” could be interpreted in various ways.

With so much symbolism and meaning set on the stage, many things could be missed in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance if not watched multiple times. It is important to pay attention to artistic stages like these, regardless of their magnitude. Sometimes, there may be a deeper meaning to them if we look closer.

The Joy of Community

Claiming our independence by striking out on our own and taking charge of our future is a rite of

passage for many new adults. We cannot depend on our guardians forever, so moving away

seems like the next logical step in our long lives.

I got the taste of independence when I was put in charge of the house for a few months, and my

initial reaction was a combination of freedom and joy. I mean, being able to live freely without

being lectured? I could not wish for a better outcome.

While living alone for months can be liberating, it can also be suffocating. Without my social

circle, life suddenly became duller and lonelier, especially during wintertime when going out is

unlikely. Soon, a gaping hole appeared in my heart, desperate for human connection.

I brought that feeling of loneliness with me on my trip where I expected to keep to myself all the

time. I stayed in cheap hostels during my trip and, inevitably, began mingling with others.

Amazingly, I felt refreshed, like colors flowing back into my life, because of talking with other

people and learning about their lives.

Reflecting on it, as much as I enjoy my alone time, meeting new people brings some

unexplainable joy and satisfaction into my life, which can also be said for others. Whether we

live close to each other, or share the same interests or hobbies, interacting with others provides

us with a sense of belonging that enriches our lives. Laughing over a meal, seeing children

mingling in parks or libraries, and neighbors comforting one another over the death of loved

ones, these acts bring satisfaction to our lives that no amount of money can buy.

A community can also be a place for people to relax and be authentic. It can be hard for social

introverts to find a circle they belong to, and the long search can discourage many. Yet, as soon

as they find their circle, the barriers immediately break down and their real, unfiltered selves are

on full display. Being accepted as ourselves and able to voice our feelings without fear of being

judged, there is no feeling like it.

In our doubts and without others keeping us in check, we might succumb to our worst impulses,

causing us to lash out and hurt others. Being involved in a community can steer us away from

that path, as seeing how our actions affect the people around us might prompt one to change their

ways. The hurt on other people’s faces would make any regular person ashamed of their actions.

Simply put, a positive community can make people realize that being good and doing good

things for others feels good, and it is a worthy endeavor to pursue.

Future owner of the Minnesota Twins uncertain as spring training begins

With spring training underway for the upcoming 2025 Minnesota Twins season, the team’s ownership remains uncertain. On October 10, 2024, current executive chair member Joe Pohlad announced his family’s intention to sell the team. The Pohlad family has controlled the team since 1984, when Carl Pohlad purchased it from former owner Calvin Griffith for a mere $44 million. Forbes values the Minnesota Twins at about $1.5 billion today. The Twins’ ownership is technically under the Pohlad family, but Carl Pohlad’s son, Jim, is considered the controlling owner of the team.

The general attitude surrounding the Pohlads’ ownership of the team isn’t a positive one. They’ve been notoriously cheap and unwilling to spend money to create a championship-contending team after various winning seasons. The consensus of the fans is that the Pohlads view the Twins as a business and not as a sports club. The track record supports this view, with the Twins only allocating around $150 million to contracted players, ranking them 17th in the league for payroll total. During the past offseason, the Twins invested a little over $10 million in three veteran players: outfielder Harrison Bader for $6.25 million, first baseman Ty France for $1 million, and left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe for $3 million. Fans are optimistic that the eventual new owner will increase spending, enabling the team to vie for a World Series title for the first time since 1991.

The expectation is that there will be a new owner by opening day in late March, but with that being a month away, it seems unlikely. The only confirmed rumor about a potential buyer involves United Wholesale Mortgage CEO Mat Ishbia and his brother, Justin. The Ishbia brothers are majority owners of the NBA team the Phoenix Suns and the WNBA team the Phoenix Mercury. They have been known to be willing to spend money, with the Suns spending the most amount of money on contracts in the NBA. The only issue with the Ishbia brothers buying the team is that they own a stake in the Twins division rival, the Chicago White Sox. To purchase the Twins, they would likely have to sell their stake in the White Sox.

With confusion surrounding the new owner of the Minnesota Twins, fans are excited for the team’s future. They have a renewed hope that the club will be more willing to spend money to build a World Series-contending team after a 34-year absence from the pinnacle of the MLB season.

“The Penguin” is a Masterfully-Made Limited Series

When the first episodes of The Penguin aired, Penguin actor Colin Farrell warned audiences that by the finale, they’d loathe his character. Boy, was he spot on.

What makes The Penguin such a gripping and thrilling series is its unwavering ability to engage viewers from the get-go. Despite initial doubts about the appeal of a supporting character from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the show captivated audiences without a single dull moment. Every scene felt purposefully crafted, offering deeper insights into the characters.

Oz Cobb, in particular, is brought to life with meticulous care, as this series provides a rich backstory that reveals Cobb’s cunning nature, despite his seemingly unassuming demeanor. While previous portrayals of The Penguin, such as Burgess Meredith’s comic-accurate version in the 1960s TV show, Danny DeVito’s quirky take in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, and Robin Lord Taylor’s complex portrayal in the TV show Gotham, each had their unique flair, Colin Farrell’s interpretation stands out for its realism. Farrell’s Penguin is a borderline psychopath, single-mindedly focused on his self-interest. His ruthlessness hinted at in The Batman through his interactions with Carmine Falcone, becomes fully apparent in this series.

Cobb’s relationship with his mother, played by Deirdre O’Connell, adds another layer of complexity. He craves her validation rather than her love, highlighted poignantly when he dances with Carmen Ejogo’s Eve Karlo, Cobb’s lady friend, dressed in his mother’s clothes, during the finale. Oz Cobb is both clever and pitiable—a man whose need for validation drives his every action, establishing him as a formidable threat in Gotham. The conclusion of the series solidifies his transformation into the Penguin, and I eagerly await his role in The Batman Part II.

One standout character from the series is Sofia Falcone, portrayed by Cristin Milioti. Her character, molded by her father’s legacy, endured a decade in Arkham for crimes she didn’t commit, only to emerge despised and feared. Sofia’s story is a heartbreaking tale of injustice and resilience, leaving me hopeful for her eventual revenge against Cobb. A letter from her half-sister hints at her return, adding a glimmer of hope to her tragic arc.

Victor Aguliar, an original character played by Rhenzy Feliz, puzzled me initially. His role became clear in the final episode—he was a testament to Cobb’s ruthlessness. Despite his loyalty, Aguliar meets a tragic end, demonstrating that nobody is safe from Cobb’s ambition.

In summary, The Penguin is a five-star show that brilliantly extends The Batman universe while remaining a strong standalone masterpiece. With its unexpected twists and engaging storytelling, it keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. I eagerly await the continuation in The Batman Part II, set for release in 2026.

On a lighter note, my dad spotted Cristin Milioti at a pub in Ireland with Domhnall Gleeson in September 2023, during the SAG strike—a fun tidbit while she was on a break from filming this incredible series.

“Invisible Fences” and On Stage

Last week, Lucas Erickson, the visionary behind On Stage: Creating a Community Dialogue Around Theater, reached out to share details about an upcoming play they’re showcasing this week, running from March 6 to March 15.

On Stage is a theater outreach and audience development program that brings actors into classrooms and community spaces across the Twin Cities. Through engaging discussions and reading scenes from plays, it fosters meaningful connections. Designed to enhance in-class learning, make local theater accessible to nontraditional audiences, and inspire future theatergoers, On Stage tackles important topics such as racial violence, LGBTQ+ discrimination, cultural diaspora, and more.

Recently, On Stage collaborated with Metro State University in a meeting aimed at fostering community dialogue through theater. By partnering with universities and community centers across the Twin Cities, On Stage seeks to shine a spotlight on theater, broaden its reach, and cultivate a new generation of theatergoers.

Invisible Fences is a heartwarming musical fable that celebrates friendship and cultural diversity. Written and performed by the exceptionally talented Gaelynn Lea and Kevin Kling—both esteemed members of the Disability Community and internationally acclaimed artists—it offers a powerful and inspiring narrative.

The play follows the journey of two unlikely friends—a Grasshopper and a Largroff (or as Erickson exclaimed, ‘…a what?!’)—as they venture to the ‘big city’ to secure the grasshopper’s well-deserved retirement. This delightful musical fable weaves a charming story while offering thoughtful commentary on diversity, culture, and the power of friendship. Performances run through March 15.

It seems to be a wonderful musical play with a cute story that plays commentary to diversity culture and friendship. The shows start today and go on until the 15th. I encourage you to go and watch this wonderful story of identity, accessibility, and the stories we tell ourselves.

“A Different Man” is a different kind of movie

Aaron Schimberg’s drama/thriller A Different Man is a tough and frustrating film to stomach, because, as a viewer, you start the film feeling bad for Edward (Sebastian Stan) as he blames his neurofibromatosis for his social anxiety and awkwardness. However, by the end of the film, you’re still feeling bad for Edward, but not in the same way as at the beginning. Edward’s reckless and downright stupid actions make the viewers pity him by the end, as he ends up throwing his life away, simply due to pride and jealousy.

I’ll admit, it does take a while for Oswald (Adam Pearson) to show up in the film, but when he does, by golly he steals the show. I initially thought that Oswald should have been introduced sooner, perhaps during or even before Edward’s transformation, but then I realized the film would not have had the same feeling if Oswald had been a friend rather than a foe. Oswald’s introduction comes at the perfect time in the film, as it begins tearing Edward’s new and improved reality to shreds.

By this point in the film, since the audience has gotten to know Edward so well, we see Oswald the same way Edward does; annoying, obnoxious, and a people-pleaser. Pearson’s delivery of some of his lines of dialogue has the perfect amount of passive-aggressive nature to them, which made my blood boil a bit because some people have said similar things to me in the past.

Oswald’s entire charisma and confidence within himself lead Edward astray, realizing that he could have been just like Oswald before his transformation if he had simply been confident. Edward believed his neurofibromatosis was the reason why he was mistreated by society, but in reality, that wasn’t entirely the case, as it was more due to his awkward and aloof nature with others.

Something I didn’t like about the film was the sudden time jumps. Suddenly, Edward becomes a wealthy real estate agent after his transformation. Really? To me, I felt like the story should have focused more on him immediately after the transformation, connecting with those who had put him down in the past. Making Edward a successful real estate agent didn’t sit right with me, because he was first shown in the film as an aspiring actor. If we want to keep the time jump aspect, I would have preferred he became the lead or supporting actor on a famous television show or something along those lines. Speaking of Ingrid, I often have a difficult time believing female characters find aloof male characters so interesting in cinema because that does not happen in the real world at all. I have never once seen or heard of a woman pursuing a completely socially awkward man because she thought he was “interesting”. In real life, it is the other way around.

Harkening back to the time jumps, there is a sudden time jump of at least 20+ years during the film’s third act, where Oswald finds Edward walking outside of a theater, and then they reunite at a restaurant with Ingrid like old friends, even though Edward attacked Oswald on stage, and stabbed a man in his home. I know that if anybody I knew was attacked by someone, they would cut ties with that person immediately, but in this story, that is not the case. Anyway, as the three reconnect, Oswald reveals that he and Ingrid have been married and have a child in graduate school and that they are moving to Canada to join a cult. Edward finally accepts his fate, and then orders his meal, with Oswald telling Edward he “hasn’t changed a bit,” with the film ending there. This felt like a random spot for the film to end, so I of course had to Google what the ending meant. Oswald referred to Edward as “Edward” in this scene, not “Guy,” which had been Edward’s pseudonym since his transformation. This means that Oswald knew that Edward was the Edward that Ingrid wrote that play about, which adds another layer of complexity to this already complex story. It begs the question, “How long did Oswald know Edward was Edward?” In all honesty, I couldn’t give you an honest answer to that, because I can’t remember. All I remember now, as I am writing this review, is how frustrated I was with Edward and his decisions during my viewing of the film. Edward kept making one dumb decision after another, which, as a viewer, is frustrating and cringe-worthy to see. However, those decisions were writer/director Aaron Schimberg’s intent. He was born with a cleft palate, so he knows what it is like to have people staring at him when he is walking on the street. He gravitates toward narratives with characters who have facial disfigurement because he has one. I believe he wrote A Different Man to capture what society thinks most people with facial disfigurements would want, but then, he used Oswald’s character as a means of displaying the fact that people with facial disfigurements live normal lives, IF they choose to do so, and not let their disfigurement be what people think of them as. With that being said, I would rate A Different Man three and a half stars out of five.

A Different Man is a different kind of movie

Aaron Schimberg’s drama/thriller A Different Man is a tough and frustrating film to stomach,

because, as a viewer, you start the film feeling bad for Edward (Sebastian Stan) as he blames his

neurofibromatosis for his social anxiety and awkwardness. However, by the end of the film,

you’re still feeling bad for Edward, but not in the same way as at the beginning. Edward’s

reckless and downright stupid actions make the viewers pity him by the end, as he ends up

throwing his life away, simply due to pride and jealousy.

I’ll admit, it does take a while for Oswald (Adam Pearson) to show up in the film, but when he

does, by golly he steals the show. I initially thought that Oswald should have been introduced

sooner, perhaps during or even before Edward’s transformation, but then I realized the film

would not have had the same feeling if Oswald had been a friend rather than a foe. Oswald’s

introduction comes at the perfect time in the film, as it begins tearing Edward’s new and

improved reality to shreds.

By this point in the film, since the audience has gotten to know Edward so well, we see Oswald

the same way Edward does; annoying, obnoxious, and a people-pleaser. Pearson’s delivery of

some of his lines of dialogue has the perfect amount of passive-aggressive nature to them, which

made my blood boil a bit because some people have said similar things to me in the past.

Oswald’s entire charisma and confidence within himself lead Edward astray, realizing that he

could have been just like Oswald before his transformation if he had simply been confident.

Edward believed his neurofibromatosis was the reason why he was mistreated by society, but in

reality, that wasn’t entirely the case, as it was more due to his awkward and aloof nature with

others.

Something I didn’t like about the film was the sudden time jumps. Suddenly, Edward becomes a

wealthy real estate agent after his transformation. Really? To me, I felt like the story should have

focused more on him immediately after the transformation, connecting with those who had put

him down in the past. Making Edward a successful real estate agent didn’t sit right with me,

because he was first shown in the film as an aspiring actor. If we want to keep the time jump

aspect, I would have preferred he became the lead or supporting actor on a famous television

show or something along those lines. Then, his desire to win the role of Edward in Ingrid’s

Are We Heading Towards a New Age of American Imperialism?

American politics has taken an unexpected turn since the start of the second Trump

administration. President Trump has entertained the idea of acquiring Greenland, adding Canada

as the 51st state, reclaiming the Panama Canal, and now, considering taking Gaza from the

Palestinians. These proposals suggest a new era of imperialism. How will these actions impact

Americans and citizens abroad? We must examine the finer details of each case to understand the

potential consequences.

First, the consideration of acquiring Greenland has been a topic of discussion since President

Trump took office. Mette Fredriksen, Denmark’s Prime Minister, has repeatedly stated that

Greenland is not for sale. While the idea of taking Greenland from Denmark may seem abrupt,

there is some rationale behind this endeavor. With the Arctic ice melting rapidly due to climate

change, rare metals and minerals like lithium, uranium, graphite, gold, and several others are

becoming accessible. Many of these resources remain untouched, and the extent of their deposits

is still unknown. Naturally, the prospect of economic gain is a driving factor behind President

Trump’s interest. There is also concern about potential trade routes and business opportunities if

more Arctic ice melts. For now, Fredriksen stands firm, refusing to let Greenland go easily,

despite President Trump’s threats to use “military force” to take it from Denmark.

Another idea President Trump has entertained is annexing Canada as the “51st state”. Like

Fredriksen, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly stated, “You can’t take our

country,” especially after Canada beat the U.S. in the 4 Nations hockey championship. Trudeau

continues to express his respect for the U.S. and his desire to maintain a friendly and trading

relationship, but President Trump has different plans for their alliance. He believes annexing

Canada would address the U.S.’s financial losses in trade and capitalize on Canada’s oil reserves.

President Trump also cites immigration concerns and drug trafficking between the nations as

reasons for annexation. While the idea of merging the two countries is implausible, fostering

stronger ties between them would be a more sensible approach.

Additionally, there would be numerous logistical challenges concerning laws, regulations, and

governance if the two countries were to merge. Would Canada become a single state, or would its

provinces be divided into individual states? How would the economy be impacted by the sudden

addition of 38 million people? Many issues would need to be addressed, and it would

undoubtedly be a long and grueling process.

The concept of reclaiming the Panama Canal has also been mentioned recently. It’s unclear

whether the aim is to take over the entire nation like Greenland or Canada, but the primary target

is the famous trade route. In 2022, Panama recorded the highest number of ships passing through

the canal, with 14,200 vessels. President Trump believes China “is running” the canal and thatthe U.S. is losing significant revenue due to tolls and trading deals. The rise in tolls is attributed

to a lack of water in recent years and basic supply and demand principles. When supply

decreases and demand exceeds capacity, costs rise for the producer, who then passes them on to

the consumer. It’s Economics 101 when it comes to these niche issues regarding trade, tariffs, and

international tolls. With China’s involvement, there appears to be close ties between China and

Panama, posing an economic threat to the United States. This could lead to labor violations and

corruption if China gains more influence in the region, potentially causing widespread issues,

especially for ordinary citizens. The canal cannot be locked down or stopped; it must continue to

handle imports and exports daily. So, how would the U.S. obtain the canal? Would it be by force

or negotiation? Or do we simply need better conversations with Panama compared to China?

Only time will tell.

The most concerning idea is the plan for Gaza and the Palestinians. The notion of creating a

Mar-a-Lago-style resort in Gaza could be devastating for everyone in the region, including the

U.S. Over 2 million Palestinians live in the Gaza Strip, and resettling them would be an

enormous and laborious task. President Trump has proposed that Egypt, Jordan, and other

neighboring nations take in the Palestinians. He envisions transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of

the Middle East,” filled with hotels and resorts. This plan seems inhumane and undemocratic,

offering a degrading solution to a complex issue. The U.S. establishing a presence in such a tense

environment could spell disaster for Americans and potentially U.S. troops if they are sent to

take over the region.

In response, warranted pushback from our allies has been directed at President Trump. The

leaders of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt have all called out President Trump, suggesting that

Palestine be recognized as a state and given long-term protection. Unfortunately, President

Trump dismissed these concerns and remains hyper-focused on his plan to take over Gaza.

Recently, President Trump posted an A.I.-generated video of his envisioned “remake” of Gaza,

featuring cruise ships, Elon Musk, resorts, and a golden statue of himself. This all adds up to a

sinister plan to remove and cleanse millions of Palestinians from their homes. This is

unreasonable, as it is unlikely they would leave easily, and no American could rightfully support

this with their tax dollars.

With all these proposals, it seems to contradict Trump’s ambition of “America first”; instead, it

appears to be “spread America more” across the globe. These takeovers reflect a past of

colonialism and imperialism, reminiscent of when the U.S. took over many Pacific islands and

meddled in Central and South America. The administration is currently negotiating a deal to end

the Russia-Ukraine war. This might come at a cost, as Trump avoids openly calling Russian

President Vladimir Putin a “dictator” and blames Ukraine for starting the war, despite Russia’s

invasion of Ukraine in 2022. If Ukraine has to concede territory to Russia, it would be a terrible

blow to the Ukrainian people and Europe alike. President Trump skirts around the issue when it

comes to Putin and Russia, perhaps drawing a comparison between the two leaders since theyboth seek land. The age of imperialism was thought to be left behind in the last century; yet we

seem to be heading towards an unexpected crash course with the President Trump and his

imperialistic ideas.
