Summer is here and it is blazing.  

Last Monday, Minnesotans experienced some of the hottest temperatures of the year, with measurements reaching over ninety degrees Fahrenheit. A heat advisory was issued, encouraging Minnesotans to stay indoors. This marks the beginning of a heat wave expected to last the week.  

According to The National Weather Service, the Twin Cities area can expect warm summer temperatures and plenty of rain this week. Temperatures will average in the mid-to-high eighties, right through Independence Day.  

For those used to the Minnesotan winters, this comes as a severe shock. We’re looking at some showers and thunderstorms throughout the week, so plan ahead. With America’s 250th anniversary coming up, this may prove to be problematic for those looking forward to this Independence Day.  

A reminder for parents and pet owners: Never leave your children or pets in a hot car, especially in this heat. The NWS reports that a child can die in just ten minutes of being left in a car, and just last year hot cars took thirty children’s lives. It cannot be stressed enough how dangerous hot cars can be. If you’re going into the store for a quick pickup, do not – under any circumstances – leave anyone in a hot car alone. 

Drink lots of water, cut back on alcohol, and take measures to protect yourself from the sun, and stay in an air-conditioned facility as much as you can. Overheating can cause dizziness, thirst, nausea, weakness, and can even lead to heat stroke. Individuals who are pregnant and elderly are also advised to watch out, along with newborns and children.  

If you do not have a home with proper air conditioning, go to a public building that does, such as the library. Do not underestimate the dangers heat can pose on your health. Watch out for others as well, especially those who are the most vulnerable, as mentioned previously.
