Metro State to celebrate Hmong New Year on Dec. 30

by

The Hmong Student Organization (HSO) is making plans for their final gathering of 2017—a celebration of Hmong New Year from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30 in Founders Hall on the St. Paul campus.

“This year, Metro has collaborated with two other campuses to bring an even bigger Hmong New Year event to all students and staff. We will be hosting this year’s event with Century College and Inver Hills Community College,” said Soua Xiong, the president of the HSO.

“We hope to make the experience and celebration reflect what a Hmong New Year offers,” she said. The event will feature Hmong music, dance, games and performances. HSO representatives will speak about customs and answer audience questions.

“We would really like our guests to wear traditional Hmong clothes. So this year, if you come to the event in traditional Hmong clothes, you will be entered into a raffle drawing to win great prizes,” said Xiong. Audience members can also participate in Hmong trivia to win a prize.

After the performances, anyone is welcome to participate in an open mic. The performances do not have to relate to Hmong culture.

The event is open to the public and children are welcome. A dinner will follow in New Main Great Hall.

The HSO needs performers for the show. “We are trying to focus more on the Hmong tradition so if you are fluent in Hmong singing, playing a Hmong instrument or would like to do a traditional dance, please contact the Hmong Student Organization,” said Xiong. To sign up to perform or volunteer at the event, contact Soua Xiong at soua.vajmim.xiong@gmail.com.

New members welcome

According to Xiong, the Hmong Student Organization is not just about Hmong students or the Hmong culture. The club welcomes anyone looking for resources and real-life skills to use outside of college.

“For this upcoming new year, all officer openings would be available for anyone to sign up since officers are graduating and some have stepped out of the roles,” Xiong said. The open officer positions are president, vice president, treasurer, public relations, and secretary. “We promote leadership skills that they want to develop,” she said.

Yeng Lee, HSO vice president, said a student organization is a great way to meet other students and have a more interesting college experience. As a member, she improved her confidence, public speaking, time management and resume.

The Hmong Student Organization runs several events throughout the year. Recently, the group held their Fall Outspoken Event, a dinner and diversity workshop on November 13. Some members also attended the Hmong National Development Conference in April 2017 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
