Sidelines to sports team: Soccer back on campus

Metro State Soccer Club members practice shooting and goal-tending at McMurray Fields in St. Paul on June 3, 2017.

On a Saturday afternoon in June, Metro State soccer players gathered on the field for their first summer practice. Team members turned in the required participation forms and received their red and blue jerseys. They were eager to play.

For the players, it was a chance to return to their roots. Most of them had soccer backgrounds. Some had played high school varsity soccer. One woman remembered her days as a member of the St. Paul Blackhawks Soccer Club. Now, as members of the Metro State Soccer Club, they could show off their skills again

Emmanuel Adeniran, a Finance and Economics major, became president of the Metro State Soccer Club in fall 2016. He wanted to build on the work of previous club leaders. With guidance from staff advisor Robert Boos, the club revised their bylaws and made new plans. Adeniran acknowledges the considerable support of the University Activities Board to keep the club going. “It is one of the first athletic programs. They want it to do well,” he said

As they look forward to the fall 2017 season, the club wants to expand its coed roster. “It’s a challenge finding more female players,” said Adeniran. He is aiming to assemble a competitive team. “We don’t want this to be mediocre.”

Although the club appreciates experienced players, they are seeking any student who wants to play soccer. Above all else, they value players who show dedication. “Some students arrive early. Some students are not consistent,” said Adeniran. Team members must attend three of five scheduled practices each season, and play in the scheduled league games on Sundays

The club practices at McMurray Athletic Fields, near Como Park in St. Paul. Games take place at Holy Angels Stadium in Minneapolis.

This summer, the Metro State Soccer Club has two teams competing in league play. These teams are the Metro State Blue Ox (blue jerseys) and the Metro State Red Squirrels (red jerseys). Each team has at least 12 students. The two teams will take part in a nine-game season and compete against clubs such as Cheerios and Rogue Squadron

The Metro State Soccer Club arranges their league games through the Cities Sports Connection (CSC). In addition to soccer, CSC offers adult leagues for basketball, bowling, broomball, kickball, softball, touch football and volleyball.

On June 24, the club attended a Major League Soccer match between Minnesota United FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. They were among 19,017 fans chanting “M-N-UFC!” The club plans to purchase tickets for two Minnesota United matches each year, and offer them at a discounted price to Metro State students. “Students can bring guests and family. We also meet players before the game,”said Adeniran.

Club members also want to explore career opportunities in professional soccer and sports management. “Hope to have networking events and meet people in soccer. We would like to take a tour of Minnesota United headquarters,” said advisor Robert Boos
