Alternate routes around the metro area

From the North: I-35W south to Hwy. 280, which directs traffic onto I-94 West or East; or I-35W south to Hwy. 36 East, exit Snelling Ave. South or I-35E South into downtown St. Paul. I-694 is best avoided, with construction consistently slowing traffic.

From the East: I-94 East is still best into Minneapolis, with additional lanes being added to accommodate extra traffic. If cross-town traffic is heavy, University Ave. to SE Washington Ave. will bring commuters across the river and into downtown Minneapolis.

From the South: I-35E is construction free into downtown St. Paul; I-35W at Hwy. 62 is under construction and frequently experiences delays. Suitable alternatives include Hwy. 100 North to I-394 West into Minneapolis, or I-494 East to I-35E North into St. Paul.

From the West: I-94 West is still best into St. Paul, with additional lanes being added to accommodate extra traffic. If cross-town traffic is heavy, Washington Ave. East to SE Washington Ave. will bring commuters across the river to University Ave. East into the frog town area of St. Paul.

Tips for returning students

Allow at least 20 minutes of additional travel time, wherever your destination may be.

Check http://www.dot.state.mn.us daily for traffic and construction updates.

Follow Mn/DOT suggested alternate routes, pending on updates.

Take into account local events that may result in additional traffic, such as the Minnesota State Fair, professional sports games or other stadium events.
