New 30 credit prerequisite for upper division COM courses

The College of Management (COM) implemented a new policy requiring a minimum of 30 credits to be completed before students can register for upper-division (300–500 level) COM courses this fall.

College of Management faculty and administration agree this policy will help students be better prepared for upper-division COM courses in the business majors.

The required 30 completed credits will allow students time to complete necessary lower-division requirements:

  • WRIT 100 & 200 level
  • MATH 115 College Algebra
  • ECON 201 Macroeconomics
  • ECON 202 Microeconomics
  • ACCT 210 Financial Accounting
  • STAT 201 Statistics
  • MIS 100 Fundamentals of Information Technology

Other Metropolitan State University courses that help COM students fulfill their first 30 credits and improve writing, reading, math, communication and analytical skills are:

  • METRO 101 Your Academic Journey
  • INFS 115 Information Access
  • 100-200 level General Education courses

These courses improve skills necessary to fully participate and succeed in upper-division (300–500 level) coursework.

If a student already has 30 credits completed from another institution, those transfer credits will fulfill the required 30 credit minimum.

When a student attempts to register for a 300–500 level COM course that does not have 30 credits completed, they will be unable to register for the course and will receive the following message: "Minimum earned credits required for this course."

No exceptions or waivers to this requirement are allowed. If a student has 30 credits in process, the credits must be completed with a grade on the transcript before the 30 credit requirement is met. Students may contact their advisors if they have any questions.
