Open House, a start to meeting students
-- Noah Vang
Sept. 11, 2007—More than 30 students atteneded Metropolitan State Activities Board’s (UAB) Open House, "Student Organization: Get-2-Know 'Em" event. The open house was a success, with many student organizations appreciating the opportunity to network and connect with students and other organizations.
Over ten student organizations distributed and displayed information for participants and students.
A first-year student said the open house made her aware of the different student organizations on campus. While undecided about her major, she plans to research more about each group and what interests her to get the most out of her college experience.
Peou Pin-Mene, the Asian American Multicultural Coordinator and Retention Specialist had the chance to tell other students about her student organization.
"We had at least 15 new students who signed up for our student organization," Pin-Mene said. "Otherwise, without this event, we would have none."
Although many student organization representatives anticipated a larger crowd, raising awareness is the focus. There are more than 8,000 students enrolled at Metropolitan State University. According to the Metropolitan status, there are 20 student organizations on campus.
"We did not have enough student participation, but we got chance to meet most of the student organization presidents," said Student Senate Clara Ware.
This was the first time we had most of the organizations in one place, said student Dorisene Anderson. For more information about student organizations, please visit Metropolitan State’s Web site or call 651-793-1550.
