“Homecoming” a success Sponsored by University Activities Board (UAB), St. Paul Campus hosted the sixth annual Fall Fest/Homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 10, where representatives from student organizations manned tables brimming with information and promotional materials and answered questions from the university’s newcomers, returning students and interested neighbors who took part in the day’s festivities...... New class added as nature sciences GELS fulfillment A new class has been added to the roster at Metropolitan State University and, to many students’ delight, it is the first completely online class to qualify as a nature sciences General Education and Liberal Studies (GELS) requirement. Introduction to Astronomy, taught by Professor Lawrence Mascotti, was added to the course catalog this year under the physics discipline..... First College has new minor The new minor, Community Organizing and Development, will be offered starting this fall semester. It is an interdisciplinary minor available to all students interested in organizing, developing and sustaining community, institutional and social change...... Level III sex offender released three blocks from campus At a recent meeting held exclusively for students and faculty at Metropolitan State University, the St. Paul Police Department notified personnel that a level-three sex offender would soon be living within three blocks of the school. Oliver Lenell Dority was convicted of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the Third Degree By Coercion in 1994 and was released into Intensive Supervised Release (ISR) on July 11 under the supervision of Ramsey County Community Correctional ISR Agent David Murray. Dority will remain in a halfway house under GPS tracking for another month, before he will move to a home in the 300 block of Eichenwald..... Letter from the editor New things continue to take place at The Metropolitan. I am pleased to announce that we now have a new production manager. Her name is Carin Mangimeli and she is a welcome addition to The Metropolitan staff. In addition, we are introducing two new columns - "A Woman's Place" and "Twin Town Sound"...... It allows them to work on group projects with individuals of diverse races, creeds, and socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Their intellectual development is heightened, particularly in fields related to classroom experiences as well as in leadership roles....... Get Involved! Back to school in Beit Jala, West Bank, Palestine Beit Jala, an ancient Canaanite city, overlooks the little town of Bethlehem from its vantage point on the eastern slope of one of the highest of the Judean Hills on the West Bank in Palestine. My husband and I arrived there on June 30, 2004, after only two email exchanges with the principal of a small Christian school letting him know of our interest in volunteering....... Walk for Justice raises awareness for groups promoting justice “Everyone who works for social justice feels beat down sometimes,” says Walk for Justice participant Laura McCarty. “It’s good to connect with others.” On a sunny Sunday Sept. morning, over a thousand people joined McCarty at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis to raise awareness and money for the social issues they hold dear.......
