Nonprofit youthrive confirms spring visit by Archbishop Desmond Tutu
youthrive, the nonprofit organization that is bringing Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to the Twin Cities in April 2008 to work with area youth, has re-affirmed that Metropolitan State University is their partner to host the Archbishop’s visit and public lecture next spring. "We understand there have been many discussions around the University of St. Thomas’ decision not to host him and we have been alerted of their subsequent decision today to reconsider," said Donna Gillen, executive director of youthrive. "However, based on their initial decision, we approached Metropolitan State University months ago and they welcomed us with open arms. We are thrilled that they agreed to host our PeaceJam event and the public lecture in April and we are working together in partnership to reach out to youth and the community to make them aware of his visit..."

As recipient of a community faculty professional development grant, D’Ambrose participated in the Michael Chekhov International Workshop and Festival held on the Amherst College campus in Massachusetts, July 30 - Aug. 10...

Fall performance of "Cloud Nine" opens Nov. 8
"Cloud Nine" by Caryl Churchill is an inventive, surrealistic and entertaining look at sexual repression and role conditioning. Set in Victorian Africa as well as modern London, "Cloud Nine" explores the parallels between colonial and sexual repression and the changing, often confusing sexuality of our own relatively modern times. With this play — considered one of her best — Churchill exposes, in distinctly theatrical ways, identities warped by conforming to "unnatural norms..."

Minding the P(ints) and Q(uarts)
It’s sort of an astute dichotomy that one of TV’s stupidest, most buffoonish cartoon characters is allowed to wax poetic - and even better that it’s about beer. Mmmm…beer…BEER: from the “under-a-dolla-make-ya-holla” 40’s, to over $10 for a single bottle specialty, beer is something of the common denominator in the liquor world. No other liquor inspires such fierce brand loyalty as the Budweiser versus Miller debate; and at the same time, beer drinkers seem more likely to compliment each other’s tastes (when it corresponds with their own, naturally)...

Pizza and games won the hearts and minds of those who attended Metropolitan State University’s FallFest 2007. The crowd laughed, cheered and applauded Martinez’s victory. Student worker Michael Lee said it was a good experience. "I had tons of fun," he stated...
Diagnosed in College
I was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness in the winter of 2005 while finishing my two-year degree at a local community college. My life became a constant struggle. My body was suffering from thyroid failure and had become so sensitive that dizziness, body aches, fever and lack of nutrition was a daily routine. From the moment I woke up, my body would start to crash. I could never feel rested. I thought a young college student and sleep deprivation went together like peas and carrots, but this was different. And so different that I had no idea what would happen. Would I be able to finish my classes and get my associate of arts degree? I had three-and-a-half weeks left to go in the semester...

Sporting The Twin Cities: Billion-dollar baseball
We’re all thinking it. Just not too many of us are saying it...for some reason. Forbes magazine recently listed the 400 richest Americans, with Twins owner Carl Pohlad coming in at number 78 at a net worth of $3.1 billion. This makes Pohlad, by American standards, the mightiest owner in baseball - overshadowing even bloated Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, whose bankroll is listed at a meager $1.3 billion in comparison. And why does it matter?
