Changes to university Academic Standing Policy effective Fall 2007 Semester

The criteria for students to stay in good academic standing and to be placed on academic warning, academic probation and academic dismissal will change at Metropolitan State University. These changes may affect you and your status.

The revised policy is based on students’ cumulative GPA and cumulative completion rate at Metropolitan State. Effective Fall Semester 2007 (Aug. 25), students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better and a cumulative completion rate of 66.66 percent or better to remain in good academic standing.

This represents a higher standard completion rate than under the policy currently in effect. Courses are considered successful when completed with grades of S or D, or higher. Courses with grades F, N, I, W or missing are considered unsuccessful. The successful completion rate (at least 66.66 percent of credits attempted to be in good academic standing) is computed by dividing the number of credits successfully completed (that is, graded A–D and S) by the number of credits attempted (that is, with grades of A–F, S, NC, I, W, Z and missing).

Students in good academic standing who fall below these standards will be placed on academic warning. Students on academic warning who fall below these standards for a second term will be placed on academic probation. Students on academic probation who fall below these standards in their next term of registration at the university will be dismissed for academic reasons unless both their term GPA is 2.0 or better and their term completion rate is 66.66 percent or better.

These changes could significantly affect you, especially if you have withdrawn from or failed over one-third of the credits for which you have registered at the university. Before choosing to withdraw from a course, you will want to carefully consider the effect that decision will have on your academic standing.

These changes have been made in compliance with policy changes mandated by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees.
