Free concerts at Twin Cities parks

-- Julia Iverson

The Twin Cities area is swinging with concerts this summer. Put on your sandals and sunglasses for the summer series of groovy tunes perfect for all ears. Sit back in your lawn chair or blanket, eat an ice cream cone, and let your mind enjoy the free!dom.

Many of the concert locations are along the biking and walking trails featured in last month’s issue. Gather up your suntan lotion and prepare for fun in the sun!

Lake Harriet
Enjoy the view of 344 acres of water as a backdrop to the beautiful music that fills your ears at Lake Harriet. All of this is FREE to you! The newly remodeled bandshell hosts the summer concerts. The history of the location of the bandshell is unique. The first concert at Lake Harriet was in 1888. The facility continues to host concerts, but it has been rebuilt five times due to fire and other natural disasters. Today, acoustics of the facility amplify the music beautifully, sending it out into the south Minneapolis neighborhood. Along with the historical bandshell, there is the Como-Harriet street car system that runs along the Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun neighborhoods, stopping at the Linden Hills station near the bandshell. Relax and enjoy the summer with friends and family. Check out the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation website for the Lake Harriet summer concerts, http://www.minneapolisparks.org.

Northrop
Summer at Northrop features lunchtime concerts all summer long and they are FREE to the public. Enjoy the music and munchies at noon time. Northrop features Cajun, Cambodian, Brazilian, Latin, and South African music along with many more! Let your ears explore the diverse sounds from around the world. Check out the concert schedule at Northrop, at www.cce.umn.edu/summer/programs/cultural/culturalprog.html.

Loring Park
Here is a heads up for free music and movies on Monday nights in July and August for six weeks in a row (July 19-Aug. 23). The price is FREE; music starts at 7:00 p.m. and movies begin at dusk. The bands featured are both local and national artists that play laid- back tunes for all ages. The movie that follows feature Steve McQueen in movies from the ’60s and ’70s. These events are cosponsored by the Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Parks & Recreation board. Check out who is playing this summer at http://www.calendar.walkerart.org/conopy.wac?id=1078..

If you know of something free that may interest students or if you have suggestions for future FREE!dom columns, email iversoju@go.metrostate.edu.
