| Women at the frontier front.
Historical skits and demonstrations highlight the challenges and joys of the women and children who accompanied the soldiers to Fort Snelling. Some women lived their entire lives in the Army and knew how to cope with the physical and emotional demands placed on them. For others, it was a new and perhaps unwelcome experience that they never adjusted to. Women of the 1820s were also consumers and producers of clothing and fashion. Learn about what people of the era wore and how it was made. The day will feature a narrated period fashion show and illustrated talk recognizing and celebrating the skills of the women of the fort. The demonstrations will take place from noon–5 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors, $4 for children ages 6 to 17. Mothers receive free admission with one paid child. Fort Snelling is located at Highways 5 and 55 in St. Paul. Call 612-726-1171 or visit http://events.mnhs.org/calendar/Results.cfm?EventID=1033 for more information.

| The artist’s architect: Frank Gehry and the artists of Venice Beach 1962-1978.
In this slide lecture, Elizabeth Armstrong will discuss the Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on the interactions and affinities between Frank Gehry and the artists of Venice Beach. It explores their mutual range of interests from unconventional, industrial materials to nontraditional forms and cross-disciplinary approaches. In an era known for the radicalism of its politics, Gehry and these California artists produced some of the most experimental and subversive work in their respective and increasingly symbiotic disciplines. Elizabeth Armstrong, deputy director for programs and chief curator at the Orange County Museum of Art since 2001, was formerly senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (1996-2001) and curator at the Walker Art Center (1983-1996). This program is sponsored in part by Summer Cultural Programs of the University of Minnesota Summer Session. The lecture is free and will be held from 7:00–8:30 p.m. at the Weisman Art Museum in the Shepherd Room. The Weisman Art Museum is located at 333 E. River Rd., Mpls. Call 612-625-9494 or visit http://www.weisman.umn.edu/events/eventscal.php for more information.
