SSC Corner: True Service
There is a hidden minority here at Metropolitan State, and I am a part of it. I am an Iraq War Veteran. Currently, veterans of the recent Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, the first Gulf War, Vietnam, and other conflicts make up 10 percent of the student population here at Metropolitan State University. For the longest time, I felt like the only one of my kind here. You see, I am not simply your average veteran, but I am a veteran who is opposed to...

SSC Corner: Human Rights
The rights of humans are something usually never contemplated unless there has been a life-challenging violation of those rights. Taking the time to consider how one would like to be treated by others is an intelligent way to approach life. The first step in deciding how we would like to be treated should be to consider how we would like to interact with others. When we decide on the approach we want to take with others, it’s an easy guess to see how we would like to be treated in kind; give as if to receive. Should these steps be taken by everyone, it could create a tolerant existence for all across the planet...

New student organization to promote “Active Minds”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in four adults over 18 years old experience some form of a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. With over 9,000 students enrolled at Metropolitan State University ranging in age between 15 and 71 years old, the campus is long overdue for some focus on mental health. A new student organization is forming to promote just that. The group is called Active Minds and their mission is to promote mental health awareness, education and advocacy on the Metropolitan State campus. The Metropolitan State chapter of Active Minds was started by Madeline Sutherland who is a graduate of Metropolitan State’s Human Services Program and a tutor in the writing center. She was inspired to start the organization by a documentary film called “Depression, Out of the Shadows.” The film tells the stories of real Americans who suffer from depression and how it affects families, workplaces and each individual. It features celebrated scientists describing the latest neurological research and revolutionary new treatments for depression...

SSC Corner - Students for Social Change
So, you think the political season is over? Think again.?Whatever the outcome of the election is, this election has been about change. People want it, politicians on both sides promised it. However, once elected, Obama or McCain will be President of the United States; not just the blue states or the red states. They will, or should be, inclined to act by the will of the people; not just acting in their own interests. Even the most powerful president cannot accomplish much without the force of the people behind him or her. Lyndon Johnson would not have signed the Civil Rights Act without the civil rights movement. Lincoln would not have announced the Emancipation Proclamation without the abolitionists pushing for it. This election has inspired millions to work together for social change. This movement must continue, and it will. We must stand up for what we believe in, left or right, up or down; we have a duty as citizens to reclaim our “democracy” and make our voices heard to create a true participatory democracy. So, as Henry David Thoreau said, “Vote not with a slip of paper...

Muslim Student Organization presents Imam Zaid Shakirs
On the evening of May 17, Imam Zaid Shakir spoke to a large audience in Founder’s Hall Auditorium about “The Ethical Foundations of Islamic Civilization.” Although many views of Islam frame the religion as violent and linked to terrorism by nature, Shakir’s words were based on a contemporary, progressive, anti-militaristic and above all anti-terrorist tone. For example, when asked during the Q&A session centered on how US Muslims can work effectively to end militarism, Shakir urged the audience to “work with people you disagree with on the largest issues” in a spirit of tolerance, humility and forgiveness. How does Islam’s ethical philosophy contribute to resolving the current global crisis?...
