"TANGO" Opens March 31 at Metropolitan State University
"TANGO," by Polish playwright, Slawomir Mrozek, will open March 31 at the Stagedoor Theater, on Metropolitan State University’s Minneapolis Campus, colocated with MCTC. The small, intimate theater is situated in the Whitney Fine Arts Center complex at 15th and Hennepin.
Written in 1964, "TANGO," defies categorization. Within a classic, three-act structure, "TANGO" combines elements of farce, "Theater of the Absurd," slapstick comedy and political discourse. Arthur, the seemingly "romantic" anti-hero protagonist, brings about his own destruction and the destruction of the world as he knows it, in his attempt to bring order to what he perceives to be the chaotic and abnormal world of his artistic bohemian family. His miscalculations result in the rise of the brutes. Civilization returns to a barbaric state.
Camille D’Ambrose, local actress and Metropolitan State University acting teacher directs "TANGO." "The play is one of those gifts that playwrights present to us from time to time, because of its continuing relevance and understanding of human nature," D’Ambrose said. "TANGO" was written in 1964—a time of political upheaval in Eastern Europe. "I am amazed every day as I watch the actors create recognizable and very contemporary portraits. TANGO is an important and witty play that will provoke fascinating conversations for our audiences on subjects as varied as the meaning of art, the turmoil of familial relationships and the genesis and growth of brutal political power."
