Students give NetDirect a failing grade As budgets at Minnesota colleges and universities shrink, online courses and automated student services are an essential cost-saving tool. NetDirect is the university’s online student portal—and the source of much student frustration. Students can register online or from computer kiosks on campus, but that’s where the easy part ends...... Money doesn’t grow on students! Approximately 1,200 to 1,500 college and university students descended upon the Capitol building in St. Paul on Feb. 9 to petition the state legislature for a tuition freeze for Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU). Students from Metropolitan State University carried signs and enthusiastically joined in the cheers and chants that rose from the crowd. Some of the students yelled to a school bus of young children, “We’re doing this for your future!” —a sentiment that was echoed by several of the speakers on the Capitol steps....... Richard Doerfler: A caring teacher who will be missed by many News of the unexpected death of Richard Doerfler shook university students and faculty alike, not to mention his colleagues at the Burnsville Police Department, where he served as a police officer for over 25 years. Doerfler, known as Rick to his students, taught Minnesota Criminal and Traffic Codes in the School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice. The huge turnout at his funeral attests to the fact that he touched many lives throughout his years as a teacher and police officer....... Proud to serve, happy to be home Ryan Pomeroy shares his memories hesitatingly. Today he is a student, living comfortably with his wife and their pet pug in their St. Paul home. But three times in the past two years, Pomeroy has been called away from that home to serve his country. While working as a member of the Air Force Reserve’s 96th Airlift Squadron (The Flying Vikings), on the flight crew of a C-130, he has been part of a war that most of us have experienced only through pictures and words sent from a world away......
