Psychology club offers networking and education to all students -- Jennifer A. Nurnberg, Psychology Club vice president The Psychology Club provides students and alumni with access to psychology professionals by arranging speakers and advisors, psychology and nonpsychology-related seminars, conferences and events, and career-pathing and -planning services. The club’s mission is to provide support and social opportunities for students and alumni with an interest in psychology. The club exposes students to topics in specialized and general fields of psychology, and helps students reach their academic and professional goals by providing access to guest speakers, network development, and other opportunities. The club accepts currently registered students and alumni of Metropolitan State University. All students expressing an interest in psychology or related fields will be considered. Online applications are available at: http://www.metrostate.edu/cps/psych/cf_form.html. Hardcopies of applications are available on the Psychology Club Bulletin Board outside the Psychology Lab (NM LL202). You may ask a Psychology Lab attendant for further assistance. Membership is maintained by either remaining a student, or graduating from Metropolitan State University. Monthly events are held to provide students with the opportunity to learn about various topics within the realm of psychology, promote interest in Metropolitan State University’s Community Psychology M.A. program, and to learn more about graduate schools, career options, and promotion of the Minnesota Psychological Association (MPA). Meeting times and locations accommodate members from around the Twin Cities area. A schedule of events is posted on general information bulletin boards around the Minneapolis, Midway & St. Paul campuses, on the Psychology Club Bulletin Board outside the Psychology Lab, and at http://www.metrostate.edu/cps/psychcalendar.html. The January meeting was held at New Century Buffet in Bloomington. Heidi Malloy, Ph.D., is the Early Childhood Studies coordinator as well as the club’s advisor. The Early Childhood Studies major is housed in the College of Professional Studies Psychology department at Metro State. Heidi provided the group with information about careers in early childhood like teachers, directors, administrators, trainers, photographers and even magicians. Most careers in early childhood have the following things in common: children, play, observation/assessment, intervention and parent involvement. The importance of play for children was discussed, including the things they learn through play, such as social skills, emotions, problem solving and appropriate behavior. Upcoming Psychology Club Events : On Feb. 19, Psychology Club members will volunteer an afternoon at the Salvation Army in Minneapolis. We will serve meals and assemble medical kits. We will be treated to a baglunch following our service. March: Seasonal Affective Disorder April: Psychology Club officer elections. Check http://www.metrostate.edu/cps/psych/club.html for up-to-date information on topics and events. For specific information, please contact Club President John Souza at psychology-club@lists.metrostate.edu or 612-250-5413. Thank you for your interest in the Club. The
