Student Senate elects officerse
Elections are complete but senators encourage student involvement

-- Valerie Novak

Summer began with the completion of senate elections for the 2005-2006 academic year. In April, you the students, voted for 15 new senators. Three hundred forty one votes were cast. Congratulations to all the new Metropolitan State Student Senator-elects: Andrzej (Andrew) Galas, Alecia Dreher, Carolyn Mai Der Xiong, Chad Hendrix, Danelle Campbell, Emily Antin, Genny M. Yang, Gustav Normark Toppenberg, Krishna Jha, Michael Verthein, Muhammad Ahsan Raja, Peris Outa, Trinidad Martinez, Loralee Broer and Valerie Novak.

On May 20 new senators elected the following senate officers: Krishna Jha for president; Loralee Broer for vice president, Andrew Galas for treasurer and Valerie Novak for director of public relations. All of the senators have great expectations for a bright new year ahead.

The new senators will decide what lies ahead in the next year, however, you the student, have a voice as well. Elections for senate seats are over, but senate still wants your input. As you may know senate is here for you, to represent the student body. You can participate with no obligation to attend all functions.

Whether you come to senate meetings or to an event, take the time to get involved, meet new people and have a good time. You can also join one of several committees that senate works directly with such as Campus Affairs, Cultural Diversity Committee, Student Activity Fee Advisory Committee (SAFAC) or Public Relations. Any of these committees are a great experience.

Rest assured that you do not have to be in politics to get involved; as long as you are a student, senate wants to hear from you. It’s as simple as that. Our current senate has a hodgepodge of different majors from economics to accounting to communications. Together, with one voice, and regardless of majors, we can all make a difference.

This year you will be seeing a lot more of senate. There will be many opportunities for students to get involved if they so choose. Even though Metropolitan State is a nontraditional school with many working adults who either have families or full-time jobs, there will still be many activities to attend. The new senators will be working diligently to see that no matter what students’ schedules or concerns are, their needs will be met.

To start off the year, senate would like to hear what you have to say. Whether you need to find out where the library is located or how to find scholarships, we want to hear from you. Simply email your question, concerns or ideas to metrostudentvoices@yahoo.com.

If you have specific questions about senate, senate events or meetings go to http://senate.metrostate.edu/ where most everything you need to know about senate is there for you to read.

Check out next month’s issue of The Metropolitan to learn more about each newly elected senator, and to give you a glimpse of what is to come.
