Campus Camp Wellstone

- Jamie Christianson

For all aspiring politicians out there, or for those who just want to have their voices heard throughout their community, Campus Camp Wellstone is the training program to attend.

Dedicated to the late senator Paul Wellstone, Campus Camp Wellstone is a nonpartisan, one and a half day training program that welcomes both veteran and green activist students alike. The heart of the program emphasizes campaign planning, coalition building, message development, triumphant recruiting and retaining and the skills of developing new leadership. It is a tribute to the knowledge, values and success led by Wellstone throughout his career.

According to the Web site, Campus Camp Wellstone was created specifically for young people to bring their talents and energy to the movement.

Young trainers who specialize in community, labor and non-profit organizations lead sessions. Camps are typically co-hosted by student government and academic department groups, and contain around 40-60 people.

The curriculum is taught through case study campaigns, giving students the opportunity to utilize their acquired skills. Examples of these are: the war in Iraq, violence against women and health care for young people.

"Camp Wellstone is high energy, hands-on, and a great success, "said Thomas O’Connell, an advisory board member of Wellstone Action. "It’s open to any students, and they have to pre-register and keep in mind that they are willing to commit to the entire thing."

Campus Camp Wellstone was introduced to private colleges and state universities, including Metropolitan State University two years ago—and proved to be a success. This year MCTC will be hosting and co-sponsoring this event in conjunction with Metropolitan State.

"Due to the presidential election approaching, this year brings in a lot of activity around politics and the future direction of our country," O’Connell said. "It is a great time for students to join; and it’s free."

Campus Camp Wellstone is being held on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 from 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. (registration starts at 5 p.m.) and on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and will take place in MCTC’s room L3000 (3rd floor of the library). Dinner will be provided on Friday and lunch will be provided on Saturday.

Space is limited, so students must register beforehand. To enroll, or for additional information, students should contact Thomas O’Connell at (651)793-1436.
