Holistic approaches to health
-- Charisse Edwards
Juggling school, work and family responsibilities can be extremely stressful for students. There seems to be a constant sense of urgency within us to complete a never-ending to-do list. We are aware of the benefits of exercise and eating right, but what about exercising the mind and spirit?
Holistic therapy focuses on treating the mind, body and spirit. The techniques used in the holistic approach to health are not as taboo as some would think. They include massage therapy, yoga and meditation.
Once perceived as naughty or something that took place inside of a shady parlor, massage is now popular among people of all lifestyles.
Massage therapy provides relief from stress, sore muscles, headaches and backaches, as well as a number of other ailments. Men, women, seniors and infants can benefit from the healing touch of massage.
Yoga may be one of the more popular types of holistic therapy. The combination of stretching and breathing techniques practiced in yoga both strengthen and center the body, and calm the mind.
Local health clubs and community centers offer classes for new and experienced yogis. You can also purchase a DVD or videotape to practice yoga in the privacy of your home.
The mind can be stimulated in a number of ways, such as reading, conversing or watching television. Meditation can help calm the mind, organize your thoughts and give you clear perspective.
It does not require that you sit with your legs crossed and light candles. Meditation involves finding a quiet place to be still, clear your mind and focus on breathing.
This may be one of the most affordable methods of holistic therapy, and for some, the hardest to practice. Meditation takes discipline and a willingness to be still and let the mind unwind. Try it for 10 minutes in the morning before you get out of bed. Or try it for five minutes when you get in your car after work.
Traditional medicine has numerous benefits, but sometimes a pill cannot fix the root of a health problem. Incorporating holistic therapy into your exercise regimen or daily routine may help prevent stress related health conditions.
