Sidebar: Top five reasons to use Metropolitan State University email

-- Nancy Yang and Rebecca Haven

5. Email alerts:
Sign up to receive Metropolitan State University alerts about events such as free massage day. Who doesn’t want a free massage? Also, if you receive financial aid, notifications regarding your payments and due dates are sent only to your school email.

4. Advising:
Use your Metropolitan State University email to contact your advisor. The link is already preset in your NetDirect account, so just click and send. If this important contact is not kept up-to-date, you may miss out on vital information about classes and deadlines, even graduation.

3. Networking:
Email classmates to make new friends and professors to network. You can never have enough friends or references. And don’t forget you can forward your school email to another email address so you’ll never miss another networking opportunity! Also, keep in mind that hiring managers and other career professionals frown upon nonsensical email address like tiger629@hotmail.com. Unless you’re applying for a job at a zoo, it appears far more professional to use an email address that includes your real name opposed to a nickname or hobby in the address.

2. Syllabus changes:
Some professors only send emails to Metropolitan State University accounts. A new change implemented at Metropolitan State University this year decrees that professors cannot enter a non-school email into a class listserv. Due to this change, professors have to either use all school email addresses or develop a completely different list.

And the number one reason to use Metropolitan State University email is...

1. Class cancellations:
Check to see if a class meeting has been canceled, especially during winter months.
