Metropolitan State University e-mail

-- Rebecca Haven

What’s the deal with Metropolitan State University email? According to a recent survey by The Metropolitan student newspaper, most students don’t seem to see the need for it.

Students were asked if they used their email and whether or not they used it for purposes outside of the classroom, such as receiving assignments and so on. Out of the 27 students queried, 20 said they use their email; 18 said they don’t use it outside of the classroom.

The few students that said they do use their email for purposes outside of the classroom said they employ it to contact their advisor or for school purposes.

Students were also asked how much they know about their Metropolitan State University email, and whether they know it can be forwarded to another account easily. Out of the students surveyed, 17 said they did know about the forwarding, but only 10 said they actually forward their email.

Six students said if they didn’t already forward their email, they would be more likely to use their email if they could forward it.

When asked why students do not use their email outside of the classroom, the majority of responses indicated that students see it as just one more email account.

Most Metropolitan State University students are working-students and already have email at work, and/or they have a personal email account already set up. In many cases, both are true.

One student said they already had five email accounts and they didn’t need anymore.

Another major response received was that Metropolitan State University email takes too long to access. Students said that having to log in to the Web site twice was cumbersome.

One student also pointed out that there is no "sent mail" box, which they believed to be a problem because they were unable to keep track of what they had sent.

There are many reasons why students should continue using their Metropolitan State University email addresses, despite some of the problems they may have (see sidebar).

Metropolitan State University’s email system may not be something that all students use—or like to use; but, it is a necessary piece to being a part of Metropolitan State University. It’s essential to stay in contact for class, and students are occasionally required to use it for their classes.

Adding one more email address to your list might not be such a bad thing. As one student said, "What about those people that don’t have any email addresses except for their school address? We should keep it and use it for them."
