-- Editor's Note:The following are excerpts of an email sent by Metropolitan State University’s Director of Public Safety, Thomas R. Maida, MPA, regarding thefts on campus. The thefts took place in early March.

Thefts on the St. Paul Campus

Wallets were stolen from purses at the Library and St. Johns Hall. In one case, the purse stolen was left unattended in an open office area that was not locked. In the other case, the purse stolen was locked in an office. Security Officers believe the thief knew the purse would be in the office.

The St. Paul Police Department has established an East Side Business Listserv notifying and networking with organizations about the alleged thief’s actions. It is believed this person has been involved with thefts at many different businesses on the East Side. Safety staff is continuing to monitor the Campuses for the alleged thief or others who might have similar interests.

  • Do not leave valuables unlocked or unattended.
  • Active and direct involvement is key to the success of your own safety and security.
  • Call for an escort or walk with a friend during the day or evening.

Minneapolis

A report of a rape in Loring Park was received by the Minneapolis Police Department on Feb. 25. The victim stated that she was raped at gun and knifepoint just prior to midnight on Feb. 24. Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to contact the Minneapolis Police Department at (612) 673-2655.

Use the following tips to help prevent you from becoming a victim:

  • Use the MCTC Public Safety Escort Service. Escort services are provided to areas within one block of the college campus.
  • There is safety in numbers. Walk with groups of people.
  • Don’t take unnecessary risks. Stay in populated, well-lit areas.
  • Use a buddy system with your trusted friends. Watch out for one another.
  • Remember suspect information, including approximate age, height, weight, hair, clothing, jewelry, scars, tattoos, and anything noticeable.
  • Report crimes immediately to Public Safety and/or the police.
