| Think Again! Lifelong learning workshop series presents “Fishing Twin Cities lakes and rivers.”
Few anglers realize the incredible fishing potential within the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Join Chet Meyers, a fisherman with over 50 years fishing experience, as he offers tips on the best locations, time of year and tackle for largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye and panfish. Beginning anglers are encouraged to attend. Meyers will share his experience from 5:30–7 p.m. in the Ecolab Community Room at Metropolitan State University library. | Robyn Ochs to speak at the university.
Nationally recognized writer and lecturer on bisexuality, Robyn Ochs, will speak at the St. Paul Campus, Founders Hall Auditorium. Her presentation, “Beyond Binaries: Living a Both/And Identity in an Either/Or World” starts at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. | Brown bag reading.
The theme for the April brown bag reading is “rain.” Bring a poem or a brief piece of prose that, in your mind, has a connection to rain. Or, just bring yourself and relax during a half hour of listening pleasure. The reading will be held from noon–12:30 p.m. in the St. Paul Room in New Main on the St. Paul Campus. | Learn how to expand Minnesota’s gardening season at Kelley Farm Workshop.
Many gardeners are
frustrated by Minnesota’s short growing season. A workshop at the Oliver Kelley Farm on April 2 will teach participants how to make either hotbeds or cold frames to expand the spring and fall gardening seasons. Through illustrated discussions and hands-on activities, participants will learn the difference between hotbeds and cold frames, see several different types and help construct one of each. | Carquest World of Wheels.
The 43rd Annual Carquest World of Wheels is one of Minnesota’s largest indoor automotive events. This art-on-wheels extravaganza features dozens of one-of-a-kind traveling world-renowned show cars, locally owned and custom-built, show-quality trucks, street rods, custom cycles, restored vehicles, celebrity-autograph sessions, the newest in garage decoration and accessories, clothing, toys and more! The American Swedish Institute and Thursday Musical present an afternoon of music as part of the Thursday Musical Community Concert Series. Pianist David Visoli will perform. | Minneapolis Institute of Arts Family Day: Tigers walking bamboo stalking.
Watch artist Kristie Lewis bring tigers to life on paper, and learn to draw one of your own. Enjoy learning tiger fables through the storytelling of Beverly Cottman. Paint a Japanese hanging scroll. Listen to the sound of the shakuhachi and koto, traditional Japanese wooden instruments. See a local Japanese dance group perform. View the art of ikebana, Japanese floral arranging, and hear haiku poems by local contest participants. The event will take place from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. It is free and open to the public. | St. Paul Art Crawl.
Come and celebrate the St. Paul Crawl with resident and guest artists who have made this grassroots event such a success. | Orchid show and sale.
The theme for the show is “Minnesota Orchid Fever.” There will be over 4,500 square feet of fantastic orchid displays designed by local and national hobbyist growers, and many orchid vendors who can get you started on growing your own orchids. There will be informative lectures each day and beginner lectures on Sunday, April 24. Experienced volunteers will be available to answer your orchid- growing questions. | Full moon on the water: Wargo Nature Center.
Wargo Nature Center invites you to come along as they head out onto the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes in canoes and kayaks under a spring full moon. After a leisurely paddle among the creeks, abundant wildlife and beauty, they will enjoy a beverage and snack. A limited number of canoes and kayaks are available to rent for an additional fee.

Back from Baghdad: A Curator’s Experience at the Iraq National Museum with Corine Wegener.
In this slide presentation, Corine Wegener relates her recent experiences during a 10-month assignment with the Iraq National Museum and gives an update on their current situation. Wegener brought museum and military experience to her work in Iraq. She is currently assistant curator in Architecture, Design, Decorative Arts, Craft and Sculpture at The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and recently retired as a major in the U.S. Army Reserve. Her last assignment was Arts, Monuments and Archives officer for the 352nd Civil Affairs Command from May 2003 to March 2004. Wegener was mobilized specifically to assist the staff at the Iraq National Museum after the looting in April 2003 and to act as a military liaison to the Iraqi Ministry of Culture. A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the William G. Shepherd room and the presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Weisman Art Museum is located at 333 E. River Road, Mpls.
