Vote to empower students
Student Senate elections take place April 11-18

-- Valerie Novak

You may be wondering, what is Student Senate? Student Senate is a governing body, and their primary purpose is to represent and advocate for students. It acts as a liaison between students, faculty and the administration. As student representatives, senators vow to provide service and hold events to help students build relationships within the university and maintain support for cultural diversity. If students have questions or concerns, senators will lend an ear, give the students a forum to present their concerns, and may be able to assist in a solution.

Candidates were selected on March 8, and many new students are interested in the senate. Elections will take place the week of April 11-18. Now, we need your votes. Simply go to http://senate.metrostate.edu/, click on the elections link and choose 15 people that you feel are the best choices for senators.

Over the years, traditions of activism and leadership have developed. By giving students a voice on issues from tuition, to parking, to academics, Senate supports students. The Tuition Freeze Campaign is one example of the way Student Senate works for students. We teamed up with MSUSA and other colleges and universities to make that campaign a success. You, too, can be a part of this great organization, even if you are not a senator. Students are welcome and encouraged to attend senate meetings, events and conferences.

Students can be involved in Campus Affairs, Cultural Diversity, Legislative Affairs, and SAFAC (Student Activity Fee Advisory Committee) committees. To learn more about these committees visit our Web site.

Senators dedicate as much time as they would like to senate. However, senators with dedication and the drive to make a difference, and those who have an interest in attending events, meetings, and subcommittees are ideal. Just because a student is busy, doesn’t mean he or she won’t be a good senator. Many current senators work full time, go to school and are still able to be successful.

Senate is multifaceted, so no matter what your strong point, you can contribute. By bonding together in one voice we can meet our goals or even make important changes!

In the future, student senate will strive to open doors to the community, promote equal opportunities for students and get students involved. Finally, Student Senate strives to become a recognizable voice at Metropolitan State University, so that students are certain that all decisions are made with their best interests in mind—putting them first.

Be sure to vote April 11-18. Go to http://senate.metrostate.edu/, click on the election link and choose 15 people that you feel are the best choices for senators. Questions and concerns can be directed to Valerie Novak at novakval@yahoo.com.
